Great training manual
Emotional Intelligence in Action is a great training manual for emotional intelligence skills with or without the EI assessment instruments. The exercises can be used in a classroom setting or in casual conversations.

Good Coaching Manual for Enhanced Teamwork
I am a serial entrepreneur, a University lecturer in Russia, Italy and the USA in Business Economics and International Law and am an international business and peak performance consultant. As such, I have read a plethora of business, motivational, peak performance, coaching, team building psychology type of books over 22 years. In fact I have enough books at home, on these subjects, to sink several ships. I therefore have read many books looking at what makes great businesses and how to motivate employees. Having said all of that, I have not read the original book by Goleman, which introduced the ideas behind EI to the world, so my analysis of this book is based upon what was presented to me by Terrell. The book examines the ideas behind EI and how to teach it through various exercises to people who have no previous training in EI. If I am being honest, EI is not something that I like, it does come across from this book as more psycho babble than useful training tool. I am not saying it is bad, but for someone with an MA in business economics, over 20 years as an entrepreneur and 10 years as a business consultant, EI is not something that ignites my passion in the same way as proper incorporation of Kaizen, to help motivate employees. If you want a book on how use EI to train employees, this is a good book. I simply feel there are better and more practical ways to ensure good employee outcomes than by using EI.If you want to teach EI, this book is recommended.

A bit of hokum
As an expert in the emotional intelligence field and a corporate trainer - - I simply can't use these exercises with my workshop participants. They are way too hokey. Professionals wouldn't care for these kinds of things at all. The activities remind me of things like the trust fall...hokey...and don't actually have the substance to work. I'm very disappointed in this book.

Helpful
This book was needed for a class my mom was taking while she is in online school for her doctorate. But the classes go so quickly she doesn't get to really utilize the books to the fullest. It should be good to keep on hand for future reference.

For a coach or trainer, an invaluable resource
As someone currently studying an MBA, I've been reading a lot of academic texts - and the first thing to say is that reading this was quite a relief. While there is academic rigour here, it's written in an extremely accessible style, and that's a big positive point to start with. As for the material, if you're a coach or a trainer, or if you work in some HR function, this will be absolutely invaluable. It's broken into a number of coaching exercises that focus on different things - e.g., win-win negotiating, or conflict resolution - that are intended to be either one-to-one sessions or team based (and that can be adapted if need be). The exercises are always clear and straightforward, and supported by downloadable handouts. On the negative side, a lot of it is a little too touchy / feely for many (me included), and if you're a leader / manager rather than a coach while you'll certainly get something out of reading this it's hard to imagine ever using it in practice. For that reason it probably wouldn't be the first book I'd recommend to someone in management. But the 5* rating I've given the book is based on your being a coach, or a trainer, or in HR - and if you are, get this. I've already recommended the book to a couple of friends of mind who work in those areas, and had some good feedback.

Good resource for training materials
i read other reviews before buying this and was in two minds about whether it would serve my needs. i am writing a training course which includes aspects of Emotional Intelligence and this is a great resource for lots of exercises. None of it is ground breaking but it is a cheap way to get hold of lots of activities and it is really user friendly too.
