I assure you... you do not have a cell with five batteries in it. You may have a battery with five cells in it, though. To recharge NiMH cells, you really need a real NiMH charger. They don't charge like lead-acid or nickel-cadmium cells do, they need a special charging regimen.

Depends on how many amps the wiper motor draws. This will put out 12 volts, but only a couple of amps.

Q: Just to confirm - in fixed voltage mode there are only five preset voltages? (1.5, 3.6, 4.8, 6 and 7.2V)

There are five presets. According to my meter they provide slightly more voltage (+0.1 v) than the indicated voltage. There is also a 0 to 15 volt variable voltage setting that lets you set the output voltage to any level you may need, up to 15 volts.
