Worked great for old 4083 toilet!
I spent a long time trying to figure out what the replacement flapper would be for an American Standard 4083 toilet and I came across this part. It looked just like the worn-out one that had a slow leek in my bathroom and it was very easy for me to swap it out for the new one. So far it’s working perfectly!

Perfect Fit For American Standard Model 2038 - Antiquity One Piece
Perfect genuine OEM replacement, install is quick and easy.Tip: the chain should be slightly slack with the flapper closed, once you have the right length remove most of the excess unused chain, leaving only an extra link or two. Make sure to close the top hook securely around the trip lever arm so it doesn’t shift when the toilet is flushed.

Flapper seals well, but lever hook design is bad
Like others have said, the standard universal flapper you get off the shelf in a hardware store did not work with my particular American Standard toilet, much to my surprise. So, I looked up the parts list for my model toilet and decided to give the OEM flapper a try. It seals great...no leaking into bowl, but I found out that every so often, the flapper chain makes a wild flip during a flush, and one of the chain loops gets hung up on the hook at the end of the flapper chain, thereby leaving the flapper open over the hole. Its just a bad design of the end hook. I replaced that hook with one I had on hand that came from an old Korky flapper and now the problem is eliminated. This is way overpriced too. Most flappers like this are under $6, so this is about 3 - 4 times more expensive, but it seems to be the only thing that works, so you're stuck paying the price.

Best Flapper for our American Standard Cadet
This one works way better than the options at local big box hardware store. It doesn't deteriorate quickly due to our bad water.

Perfect fit for my toilet...the universal ones don't work on my toilet.
American Standard has made many different toilets that use different flappers. On many of these toilets, the universal flapper does not work reliably. Even though, they look very similar, they are not exactly the same.I had to do some research to find this. First, I had to configure out my toilet model. It is stamped inside the tank, but hard to read. And you have to figure out which characters are actually the model number. Then I had to search for the one that fits my toilet. American Standard does not offer it anymore. I called them up and they found the number on Amazon for me. It is really a pain.

This genuine factory part solved slow leak problem
This part solved a problem for us. The presumably good quality Fluidmaster general replacement flapper we bought was slowly leaking, like the defective unit it replaced. Could hear toilet tank refilling several times each day. Based on reviews, got this genuine replacement part for our American Standard toilet (got this part number from support section of American Standard web site--has a lot of information, and their support is good). Other reviewers of this part had same problem we did--good quality general replacement flappers were slowly leaking. This genuine part solved the slow leak problem. Well worth the small additional cost to get the genuine factory branded part. (Note: The toilet model number is stamped into the interior of the tank, along with manufacture date, and can be seen by removing the lid and looking just below the tank's top edge. Toilet model is required to select correct flapper part number.)

A fine flapper, which confirmed that the flapper wasn't the problem
I've had a slow leak in my American Standard 2038 Antiquity that's caused an intermittent problem: after some flushes it wants to top itself off every 20 minutes or so. Clearly water is draining through the flush valve one way or another. I tried replacing the flapper with an after-market product, and that didn't work. So, in an effort to avoid replacing the valve, I thought it'd make sense to get an OEM flapper. That was this. Sadly, it didn't fix the problem either. So, I next bought a flush valve repair kit made by FluidMaster, which drops on top of the existing valve, with something resembling plumber's putty sealing things up, and comes with its own flapper assembly. That seems to have fixed it, at least so far, for about the same price as the OEM flapper. To be clear, this flapper works just fine, even though it didn't solve my problem. I'm giving it four instead of five stars because it's about twice the cost of the aftermarket flappers out there even though there's nothing particularly special about its design that should make it more expensive.
