The New Orleans of Lafcadio Hearn: Illustrated Sketches from the Daily City Item (Library of Southern Civilization) Hardcover – May 1, 2007

This was a wonderful collection of Lafcadio Hearne's newspaper snippets. If you're a fan of his New Orleans work, this book is for you. I have read and re-read. The book arrived in good condition and I'm happ to have it.

These are the kinds of blurbs, articles and vignettes that really provide a rich sense of what New Orleans was like in Hearns' day, certainly more so than the average history book would. The historical notes are helpful, but would've been easier to take advantage of (in my opinion) they were footnotes rather than end notes. As for Hearns' sketches, well, I like them but they may be a little to dark and obscure to be easily appreciated in their own right. They often do add a little bit to the stories, though.

It's certainly an interesting look at N.O. during that time-frame, but has just not enough detail. It does prove N.O. has had a problem with corruption for a LONG time.
