Q: Does this amplifier emit any hissing or other noise if no music is playing?

For me, the device is dead quiet when there is no input. If you have noise with an amp now, it's either a very cheap plastic amp, or there is a grounding issue with the RCA cables, or mini-plug-to-RCA adapter. The N22 is very well made and has good grounding and high quality RCA jacks on it. It's a good value and reliable.

Q: What's the difference between the Audioengine D1 and the Audioengine N22? Thanks!

D1 is a DAC, digital to analog converter. Meaning it takes a digital signal (optical/usb in) and converts it to analog (RCA/ headphone 3.5mm output). It does not amplify the signal. If you have unpowered speakers, you will need to purchase an amplifier (like the N22) to use them.

Q: The p4's are supposed to handle up to 125w per channel, yet the n22 is only 40w per channel? Is the n22 the best option or could I do better?

Unless you play your music at ear-splitting volumes or are using the speakers in a giant room, the N22 will drive the P4s just fine. I think the N22 is a great value for the money. You could find more power for less money on eBay, but watts are kind of like horsepower. How often does a Corvette get to use its 600 (or whatever it is) HP? And, of course, if you should ever become dissatisfied and want MORE VOLUME, you could always pick up a powered subwoofer.
