Dodge ball with monsters...
First, here is my re-enactment of how this game came to exist in the first place:Edward (an out of touch gaming executive): Alright, glad we could all make it to the meeting today in spite of the raucous company party. Sorry I left at 5:00 PM, but Golden Corral was calling my name--it was senior night! Anyway, last week I went to pick up my grandson from school and found him playing dodgeball. Denise and Tyrell, I want you to start working on a dodgeball game because that looks like good fun.Denise (hungover): Can't we just make the NES Super Dodge Ball game compatible with the Gamecube?Tyrell (also hungover): Yeah, that game was awesome.Edward: What? What is an NES? No. I want something new. Now Christopher, Fernando, and Jiang you are about to be so excited. I just got us the rights to Monsters, Inc. to make a video game adaptation! Isn't that awesome? Oh man, I just love Mike Wazowski--reminds me of a younger Edward! Think you can do that?Christopher, Fernando, and Jiang (in unison...hungover): Sure. Whatever you say.*Edward leaves the room.*Christopher: What the hell is Monsters, Inc.?Jiang: I think it's a kid movie or something.Tyrell: Yeah, my niece loves it, but man, a dodgeball game? Wait, none of you have ever seen Monsters, Inc.?Everyone else: No.Tyrell: Oh, look, it's a game about these little monsters who...play dodgeball! Let's just merge projects.Everyone else: Yeah, whatever, sounds good to me. Seems kind of weird to have a cartoon about dodgeball, but whatever we'll take your word for it.**End scene**What you get if you purchase this game is Dodge Ball meets Monsters, Inc. There is no real plot, and it is not really ever explained why the monsters decide to play dodge ball. It just happens. You could replace Monsters, Inc. with the cast of Three's Company and get the same general game (but more awesome). There are multiple static scenes (e.g., the training bedroom, Mike's house, a street scene) with some interactive elements that influence gameplay slightly. For example, in the city scene there is a fire hydrant that can knock a character back. Kids will recognize many of the scenes, so that part is cool. For the most part, though, the game involves running around and tossing various balls at another monster. Some are just standard balls, while others have special effects like putting the enemy monster into a bubble temporarily. There are many monsters available. On each level there are different objectives, such as hitting targets or hitting the opponent or playing keep-away with one of the balls. Each scene has the same basic objectives, and you have to finish all three before you can continue to a new scene. The game play is pretty straight forward. Run. Pick up ball. Throw. It is easy enough for a kid to compete but difficult enough that there can be a challenge. My favorite part of the game is that my daughter and I can play tandem. While some levels might be more challenging for kids, they are not frustratingly difficult for the most part. My daughter is not a big fan of playing it alone, but it is a fun game to play together. If you are purchasing this game because you want a Monsters, Inc. game that is true to the movie, stay away. If you want dodge ball with monsters, it's a fun enough game.

Such a cute game!
I actually purchased this game for my 4 year old daughter and she got such a kick out of it. I would hear her giggling from her room all the time when playing it. There are some tough spots that I had to help her with but for the most part its a fun little game for pretty much all ages.
