like a pocket
If you have gophers, use this to keep them from eating the roots of your bushes, including blueberries. You can also use it above ground to keep rabbits and deer from eating the tops. It comes delivered flat, like a pocket, and then you pull the layers apart to make a circular cage.

Protects young roots from gophers
Keeps gophers from eating roots when trees are young and not bitter to them. Mature roots are usually bitter and self-protecting.

gopher wire basket
First of all, these wire basket will deteriorate over the years. That is when you have your problem as gophers begin to eat away at your plants. When I first planted a wire basket, it was within one day a gopher came, popped up out of the ground outside the basket and then crawled over the basket rim into the basket down to the roots. I had to put a wire top on basket. The best idea is those gopher Sonic Stakes. I have planted those in my yard and I hope this will do the trick.

Work great upside down to cover plants and keep the animals out. Put these over my strawberries to keep the birds and chipmunks off. wish they were cheaper and that i could buy more than 3 at a time.

Five Stars
Please do a great job. I use them every time I put in a new plant. They work.

not as large as the package claims
The 5 gallon root guard was way too small to fit the 3 gallon root ball I was planting. Maybe best suited for one gallon or two at the most. The product is essentially a lightweight chicken wire, clipped together along three sides, which allows it to be bendable but way too small for my use. Returned for my refund.

Often Better Than Nothing
Can be useful in a couple of situations. They can be used for new plantings of shrubs- the roots will of course grow through and the gophers will find them, but with luck the plant will be able to root deeply enough to get past their active zone before they manage to kill it. A 5 gallon basket is big enough for up to 2 gal. pots, but you will have to remove a lot of dirt to get it in the ground, and gophers will be attracted to the loosened earth and able to move around easily in it; presumably you'll be watering so that will also attract them and make it much easier for them to get around. Or you could use it to protect a smaller rooted plant, such as annual flowers or lettuces, but you usually want to plant those in some quantity, and the baskets are expensive and difficult to bury. They're also a real pain to unbury if you want to change something.
