Q: Is this basically equivalent a firebrick once dried?

Don't know the answer in a scientific way, but I've used it 3 times, over the last 6 years, to repair old fire brick in a manufactured fireplace (worked great) and a broken Chimera. It works. I've had to redo the Chimera a couple of times, but no repair lasts forever, and I believe it works super, and will buy it again. Nothing lasts forever.

Q: I want to use this to plug gaps between the wall and the painted fireplace where some ants are entering. Is this the right stuff?

This product is great for repairing cracks and holes inside the actual fire box. Probably better products to use on the exterior of a fireplace near the wall.

Q: Can you use this to repair crack in clay chiminea?

Sorry, I am not qualified to answer your question...What I used it for, was the stone flooring of my fire place showed small fracture lines..?.As, you are aware to fill in those cracks....You needed to use some form of cement puddy with the added feature of holding high temperatures...Which it did magnificently.

Rutland's Mortars are smooth-bodied and so are perfect for tuck-pointing or repairing mortar between bricks. Our cements are mostly thicker and have larger pebbles or aggregate in them to strengthen the application. Most all of Rutland cements and mortars are rated above 2,000-F.
