FIRST NATURE3088 32-ounce Oriole Feeder

This can be a good Hooded Oriole Feeder.
This can be a good feeder for the Hooded Orioles here in California but what I have found is the Orioles prefer a smaller diameter reservoir when feeding. So I use one of the smaller reservoirs from one of my hummingbird feeders with this base and the Orioles use it more now. I discovered the Orioles had more difficulty using my red 32oz hummingbird feeder I had shaped square just like this orange one so I switched the reservoir to a smaller round one to see if it would help and it sure did. I don't find that the Orioles here are especially attracted to the color Orange they go straight to the red hummingbird feeders unless this one is more prominently displayed. This is the second Oriole nectar feeder I tried the first hanging one was the type that you could slide an orange down over the hanger and it had jelly stations, the Orioles didn't touch it. I decided to put out oranges and grape jelly for them since I have been feeding them nectar for a few years and they didn't even touch the oranges or the jelly. I watched the female land on the half cut orange for a perch then not even seem to recognize it was a food source and just jump from there to the nearby red hummingbird feeder. I gave up on the oranges and jelly after two weeks. So the Orioles feed from this but the orange color doesn't seem to attract them any more than a red hummingbird feeder does here. The feeding holes are sized fine for the Orioles here they are they same size as a previous hummingbird feeder I was using for them so I knew it would work. It doesn't leak and the perch size is just a little larger then the cheap mart feeders I use for the rest of the hummers which is good for the Orioles. If you don't absolutely need the 32oz capacity I would recommend using a smaller diameter reservoir with it if you have Hooded Orioles. They can still feed with the larger reservoir but in my testing they preferred the smaller size since their head doesn't have to avoid the extra width of the square reservoir [especially at the corners]. I have never seen another type of Oriole here besides the Hooded variety.

Birds Like It - 10 Ports
I was a die hard Perky Pet 209 hummingbird feeder user. I tried these on a whim as I wanted to try to attract the Orioles. This feeder is exactly the same as the First Nature hummingbird one but colored orange which makes no difference to the hummingbirds already using my feeders. I have been pleasantly surprised that the hummingbirds quite like this feeder. It has 10 feeding stations which is 4 more than the perky pet 209. As I have a large contingent of feeder users this is a bonus. Some feeders the birds just do not like. Not the case with this one. They may prefer it over the Perky Pet. I will have to see how the plastic holds up over time. This feeder has a plastic reservoir versus the glass one on Perky Pet.Update to this review. Jan 26, 2018Review for First Nature 32 oz hummingbird feeder #3055.I have about 4 of these feeders and am quite happy with them. Moreso, the birds like them. I have been feeding the hummingbirds for 40 years. I currently live in Pleasant Hill , CA the San Francisco east bay area. I initially bought one of these feeders for the Orioles. The same feeder is used for the hummingbirds. Only the color orange differs. Well, my birds seemed to like the feeder so I purchased a few more. I was amazed to read all the negative comments about these feeders as I find them to be quite good. The pro’s include 1. 10 feeding stations 2. Easy fill and wash, no funnel needed. 3. The birds like them. 4. No flowerettes to rot and break A slit is cut in the plastic.4. I have no trouble with leaking. 5. Not prone to forming black algae. The cons are 1. Once low on volume they blow a bit in the wind due to being light plastic rather than glass. 2. Bees can stick their head in the slit and get nectar but that happens on most feeders.. The floppy hook on top flops over so it takes 2 hands to engage on the hook. I taped mine vertically as I have to hang out the window to hook up.Overall these feeders are a good value. My favorite is the Perky Pet 209 original glass bottle feeder. They are no longer sold. The newer version is the 209B which I find to be not as good. I modified my old 209’s by drilling additional holes to make 10 feeding ports and adding the flowerettes. I look for and buy used 209’s when I can.I have on the order of 100 birds that visit my feeders. With ten feeders up, they are all full with birds during the evening rush. I usually make 3 to 4 quarts of sugar water each day. To keep your feeders clean and to kill any algae that grows just soak in 50% bleach for 20 minutes and rinse well. Hummers are great little wild pets.

Lightweight, Large Capacity, "unbreakable" Plastic Feeder that Really Attracts Orioles.
First I'm not sure why the Oriole 32 oz feeder is priced like $13, and the comparable red hummingbird feeder is $10 -- but whatever. We have an issue with bears visiting our backyard, climbing the fence and feasting off the 6 hummingbird feeders we usually have hanging there. They bang away, tipping the feeders, or often knocking them to the ground and licking their way to happiness. Needless to say we've lost many glass feeders along the way.The advantage of these feeders is that they are plastic, and though swatted to the ground, have not broken. For us that is a particular advantage. But the large 32oz size is a plus, since our 6 feeders can be completely emptied in just one day by the number of birds we have feeding daily. And yes, the orange color and large feed holes attract several orioles each day. The hummers feed on it as well, but it's nice to have a source for orioles. The reason I didn't rate a full 5-star is picky, but it was a problem one day. The feeder bottom is in two parts, sliding together to make the one base. Taking a full feeder out to hang, the bottom became disengaged, spilling heavy sugary water all over the patio -- but fortunately not inside!.It's not a major drawback, but needs to be noted -- double check the bottom is tightly slid together.PROS: Large 32 ounce size; wide mouth for filling; "unbreakable" plastic construction; lightweight; hanging hook included; specially designed for orioles Low price.CONS: Slide-together base can come apart if not fastened carefully. Some may consider the plastic bottle too easily cracked. Personally I like the plastic.

our orioles didn't like it
The hummingbirds loved it when we first put it up but the orioles did not. After watching some youtube videos we realized it was probably because of the shape of the holes - which were slits and more oval than round. This is a key detail since there weren't any photos in the listing that properly displayed the size and shape of the holes. We decided to drill the holes a little larger. not sure if the orioles will go near it yet as the squirrels keep tipping it til it drains out competely, or they just knock it down onto the ground. anyway, i'll be looking for a new design next year. This one comes apart so that it is very easy to keep clean, which was a huge factor in my purchase of this feeder...it's the holes that seem to be the issue.

Not the best quality
Plastic & clasp are very light weight plastic so won't last long. Fluid spills out with the least touch...if a bird lands on it they will spill it all over. So far just the ants like it.

Works well for its purpose
Hubby uses this and the only comment he had was that he had to make a longer hanger for it. To me, that's a personal preference and doesn't reflect negatively on the product. We have to bring it in every night because the raccoons like to get into it. Once again, that's not specific to the product but it is to our experience. I'd buy it again if needed.

Birds can't perch, so unable to feed
Made of glass, making it heavy but also easier to clean. Main complaint is that the perches move (rotate) VERY easily making for an unstable landing and then, if positioned straight out from feeding hole, they're too short and Oriole can't get beak down to opening to feed. Will have to jury rig some way to position and secure perches at an offset to hole. Didn't want or use jam/orange parts. Would not have bought if I'd known.

The Orioles don't like it ....
Product is fine, well made. Should be satisfactory. But the Orioles do not like it. They have briefly 'checked it out' a couple of times but won't use it.I bought another brand of Oriole feeder at the same time, (I'm using the same feeding liquid) and the Orioles love that one. I have multiple Orioles visit that feeder many times a day. Don't understand the difference.
