The most comprehensive practical guide of it's kind for the serious student of jazz!
A well-written approach to playing jazz trumpet, but it's lessons have application to many if not most other instruments as well. Very readable - doesn't get bogged down in technical language - but still gives insights into basics of music theory where necessary while giving plenty of examples and many more recommendations of important musical influences the student can/should listen to. A definitive method book - highly recommended to all players interested in expanding their jazz horizons!!

Basic, insightful guidance on Dixieland music from a practitioner—buy it!
Jim Thornton's Down Home Conservatory Method is a valuable resource for those trumpet players—and other instrumentalists—who want to understand Dixieland music, how to play it, and what their respective roles are so that they fit into the tradition of the genre. He presents his material in a clear writing style. And, importantly, he captures in one volume the important aspects of history, style, and valuable guidance on how to do it. You won't be sorry you bought it. Too, he sprinkles the text with a wide range of anecdotes that will delight you.

Great trumpet method book
Great trumpet method book. This is not your ordinary method book. It draws you in by including the history of Trad jazz as well as history and experience of the author. This book has opened up my eyes on not just Trad jazz but how to improvise in general. It explains it in a way that others do not. There is always that teacher or method book out there that is a hidden gem and this is one of them. I have gone through the book twice making notes and highlighting important areas. This book is a must read if you are into Trad jazz or learning to improvise as well.

THE BEST TRAD JAZZ BOOK OUT THERE!
It spoke my language in that music is not only universal, but the sounds of New Orleans style jazz are so pleasantly harmonic that one cannot help but want to dance along with it. Unlike more contemporary forms of jazz that can get somewhat intellectual. Happy happy music instruction that had me page turning, highlighted and done in 2 days. If I can survive these last 10 years of my life in reasonably good health, it would have been a great run! Thank you for paving a way Jim!!!!!

wow! this is what you're looking for . . .
comprehensive yet simple guidance on traditional jazz trumpet . . . it is concise, well conceived, and well executed; and is highly recommend for beginner, intermediate, or advanced players. is written so that the reader can take it in "bites" and process the information. not dry textbook fashion, but in a style that allows you to keep going back to it. it is the author's presentation of his perspective; a presentation of experience; thus, he relates history, desire, theory, and more. this should be required reading for any musical instruction - trumpet or otherwise. i picked up another copy and sent it to a family member that also plays. easily the best instructional "philosophy" book on trad jazz trumpet that i've seen. nice spiral binding as well . . .

Answers the immortal question ...
I think every musician (male or female) should have a framed print of the following quote from this book on their wall to inspire them while they are slogging through another practice session.“Based on my years of experience playing trumpet at the Bustout Burlesque Show, I have devised an analogy that I feel accurate and memorable: a proper traditional jazz ensemble is like a beautiful woman in a tight corset."…"The reason I favor this analogy is that it emphasizes a truth about music that my mom shared with me many years ago. I was about 11. Mom was sitting on a blue velvet sofa in the living room drinking tea out of a cup and saucer. We were having a discussion about what makes music ‘good music' versus ‘bad music'. She paused a moment and said ‘I think good music should make a woman want to take off her clothes.’'""I have to agree. Anyone can practice law, but very few folks get to play trumpet for burlesque dancers.”

Educators should have this on hand , ready to open a new but very original part of jazz history
A journey and a method. Trad jazz appears deceptively simple and familiar - then you get insights like this that take you inside the many important roles in collective improvisation . This is an exceptional text for trumpets and all who participate in the front line of Trad jazz. Well done Mr Jim Thorton- and heck, these kudos are from a trombone player !!

Outstanding book
This book contains all (but only) the knowledge I have been trying to cobble together myself (and failed) over the past 7 years for unlocking the formula for playing early jazz & early jazz improv. I cannot thank you enough, Mr. Thornton! I had been so lost in the avalanche of music theory that's readily available online, never really knowing which were the most important and pertinent parts I needed to be focusing on. Now I know!

Bel metodo...
