The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women: A 4-Week Head-to-Toe Makeover
J**E
An excellent basic boxing instruction manual for anyone seeking to get in shape.
Even though I am well into my senior years my passion for the martial and combat arts is still strong and I still do intense workouts 6 days a week. One of my continuing interests is boxing and when I saw this 240 page soft cover book (The Gleasonโs gym total boxing workout for women by Hector Roca & Bruce Silverglade, forward by Hilary swank) on Amazon I decided to purchase it.This book is focused on training women boxing for total fitness; however, anyone who is interested in boxing and fitness will find this book very interesting and highly informative. Anyone who has trained in boxing can verify its value in working the entire body. Boxing workouts build power, strength, coordination and endurance. It is good to see more women getting into boxing and mixed martial arts today. To this day, in my 6 days a week workouts, 3 of those days my workout routine consists of 12 to 15 rounds of shadow boxing routines. This book covers the following material: A short forward by Hilary Swank who was trained by one of the authors of this book (Hector Roca) for her award winning role in โMillion Dollar Baby.โ Gleasonโs total body workout program, mental preparation, live right, boxing basics, training basics, build your foundation, find your style and strength, counterpunch, become a knockout, and advancing your skills in the gym.I have to admit to really loving this excellent total boxing workout manual. In my opinion (As someone who has taught seated boxing to seniors for many years), anyone whether a woman or a man would benefit greatly reading this book along with hands-on training from a boxing coach or instructor. If you are a person (Women or Man) who is interested in getting into fantastic shape through boxing workout routines this is a book you should check out. I think this is one of the best โhow to boxโ books I have ever read.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Training Alone in Combatives and Self-Defense).

Not quite what I wanted, but still good
I was looking for a book to tell me how to work with our new punching bag, this isn't quite that as it is geared more for the person who really wants to do boxing as a sport. It is still a good book with lots of great instructions and workouts.

Excellent boxing instruction
I found this book to be well done. It has a 4-week workout schedule with three workouts per week. I am on the third week and not only are my arm muscles developing, but they glow when I finish a workout and I feel great. This is a full-body workout - you don't stand still and push your arms around. In addition to 3-minute round-style combo punches and defense, you jump rope and do strength exercises (push ups, crunches, flutter kicks). The instruction is well-illustrated and the book does a great job of motivating you. This can be an intense workout, but you'll feel stronger after each one. You really need to put your all into the workout - no half-hearted punches, and no cheating!I purchased this book to start boxing for fitness, and I love it. These are actual punches and combos you could take to the ring someday, if you wanted. I also purchased a DVD boxing video and I find myself drifting off and going back to this book because it encourages you to practice numerous combos and come up with your own unique workout, not a boring jab, jab, right, hook, repeat 10 times.Get a pair of gloves (mine are pink), pick up this book, and really work off the pounds.

But I still enjoyed reading it
I bought the book for my wife at the time I looked through it and really wanted her to try it. Needless to say, we divorced. But I still enjoyed reading it. Put a lot of emphasis on technique which I liked. I gave it to a friend and she loves it!

I Can Box!
I bought this book to supplement the boxing workouts I recently started with my trainer to 'shake up' my exercise routine. The book provided a great explanation for the sport and how I, as a woman, could benefit without getting all bulked up or even having to step in a ring, although I hope to do that at some point. As an almost-62-year-old woman, it feels good to be able to apply the books routines to my workouts and know I'm joining the ranks of so many younger female boxers with ease...well, 'ease' may not be the best word choice since it really kicks my #@%! The quotes and tips throughout are also helpful. I showed my trainer and he loved it, too. I may have to visit Gleason's Gym the next time I'm in NY!

I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book. Great basic explanations, realistic look at boxing being tough, and good workouts. I don't keep a lot of books but I'm hanging onto this one for a while and going to give the workouts listed a try.

Easy book
I bought this book to excercise post partum. I like how easy it is to follow the steps each day. It is very inspirational but the book is easy to read without too much fluff. I have lost 6lbs of the last 10lbs i have to loose after having baby. I don't always get to work on the days that I would like to because of baby so I can't tell whether the 4wks program works. But it has gotten easier for me to do pushups! I bought a punch bag too and I love boxing. It's a great workout.

Total body boxing
I bought this book hoping that it would contain a program I could follow. It is a comprehensive guide to starting boxing. However, all of the workouts include skipping rope cardio sessions. I thought I would be able to adapt the workouts/routines and that it would provide bag workouts. It doesn't, there is only a small mention about bag work towards the end of the book. If you are looking to learn how to box/shadow box and enjoy skipping this is the book for you. All the moves and sessions are well explained/broken down so even someone who has never picked up a glove could follow the routines. It's just not what I was looking for, hence the 3 star score.
