Works!
Finally! I have fought the squirrels for years. I am impressed with the intelligence and persistence of those little "devils" -- but oh so weary of them. They eat a lot, scare my pretty bird's and ..... I have tried it all: Baffles, cayenne infused food, pure suet and at least a dozen other "squirrel proof" bird feeders. I hesitated to buy this one because of the cost and I read that bird's can get stuck inside. The problem of the bird's getting started tuck inside is clearly fixed - I see absolutely no way for a bird to crawl inside. The top baffle hangs over the "airing" holes at the top. As far as the cost? Well I can tell you I wasted far more trying other alternatives, alternatives that NEVER worked! The squirrels either learned how to overcome the design, learned to destroy and adapted very well at EVERY deliberate turn. This feeder is fabulous. The squirrels simply had to ping off o a couple of times to know that they didn't want anything to do with it - regardless of the delicious treats inside. For the most part all my pretty birds have adapted - the red headed and red bellied woodpecker now go solely to the suet (that is out of reach of the squirrles. The feeder is easy to refill - simply Turn Off the connection and slide the baffle up. For those who don't like the mourning doves may be disappointed - they have adapted. I love all the bird's so I am happy, but .... I just wish I had bit the bullet sooner and bought this feeder sooner. I am extremely happy! I finally no longer feel when I am home to be on patrol - and when I am home I get to simply enjoy what I love - the bird's!!!

The batteries don't last.
The batteries don't last. They lasted less than one day. I used fresh Duracel batteries three times. I give up. Nice large feeder the birds like but don't count on squirrel protection.

Holds ALOT but has design flaw that traps birds
I was looking for a feeder that would keep squirrels and raccoons away. Saw this one had a battery and gave a mild "shock" so I figured I'd try it. It holds almost 20 pounds and that's perfect because we have it at a weekend cabin and I only have to fill it once a week. Problem is the design of the plastic that is right under the dome. For some reason, it was designed with a scalloped edge that allows small birds to get into the feeder right beneath the dome. Once in, they can't get out. One weekend I found a dead finch in the feeder. This past weekend there was another finch still alive. Then I noticed a pigeon walking all over the metal dome on the top. So much for the "shock". I'll use wide tape and some screen material to cover the openings under the dome and that should fix the problem. Other than that, I like the feeder because it holds so much seed. It's heavy but I have it on a pulley system which makes it easier to lower and raise.July 24th..Returned to the feeder after a week and found another live finch inside. This time the finch entered the feeder through the individual station. Once the feed drops below a certain point, the birds can get in but can't figure out how to get out. So my only solution is to take the feeder to my home where I can observe it all week. The only advantage I can see to this feeder is the amount of seed it holds. You definitely can't fill it and forget about it for a week. You have to hang it at your permanent residence in order to monitor, not a part time home. That's a big flaw.

Works just like I wanted it to!
I have tried everything to keep the squirrels out of my feeder. I thought I'd try this as a last ditch effort. A few days after we set it up a squirrel ventured up the pole and sat on the bottom metal plate. As soon as he put his paw on the metal feeder he jumped right down! It didn't throw him off or anything; he just knew he wanted no part of that! It was fantastic! Now the squirrels come to the bottom of the pole and eat what gets dropped on the ground but they won't even go up the pole! It's great to watch and there are plenty of perches for the birds. I would definitely recommend it! Only one thing...if you turn it off to put food in it or touch it, count to 10 after you turn it off. It takes a few seconds for the current to go away. You won't get shocked but you'll get a little tingle!
