The instructions do not show how to assemble the handle on the cover. Doe the washers go under the lid or over the lid?

first fit the rubber grommet in the hole. There should be part of it on top and bottom of the glass. Then put the handle on top and put the screw through the hole then on the bottom side put the washer and nut on to the bolt. You can use a wench to make it tight but not too tight the glass might break. Hope this helps

I guess you can but I think you will be defeating the smokeless cooking feature
