‘I apologize for being late. Bao qian, wo chi dao le.’
Once again Lingo Mastery has come to the rescue, allowing us to make Chinese more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘Thanks to this book, we will see how to deal with many situations that can be simple, complicated, funny or even not funny at all…Most of the time, a translation with the vocabulary at your finger tips is the best solution and therefore, why not take precautions and study a few phrases that could amaze your fellow travelers or your interlocutors?’Having made available their Chinese language books CHINESE SHORT STORIES FOR BEGINNERS, INTERMEDIATE CHINESE SHORT STORIES, 2000 MOST COMMON CHINESE WORDS IN CONTEXT, now they add EASY CHINESE PHRASE BOOK – and the preparation about the phonetic system for the Chinese – Pin Yin (using the Roman alphabet to write standard Mandarin Chinese) – is superb as is the excellent instruction on how to pronounce Chinese words correctly. The book addresses phrases in the following categories: colors, numbers, greetings, date and time, common questions, medical, ordering food, transportation, emergencies, technology, conversation tips, date night, shopping, children and pets, traveler’s guide, directions, apologies, business, small talk, the weather, hotel – just about everything a traveler will need to enjoy a successful trip and interaction with a new country of people. After their fine instruction, the authors add helpful suggestions – practice every day, read while listening, study in groups, and create your own exercises – to increase the transition into learning the Chinese language comfortably and securely. The technique is solid and the lessons well taught. This is a very fine introduction to Chinese vocabulary and culture that may arise when you visit China or simply conversing and understanding the Chinese population here at home. This book is appropriate for all age levels, and a book much needed at this time in our national status! Grady Harp, August 20

A Chinese phrasebook taken to the next level
I have used Lonely Planet and Berlitz Chinese phrasebooks to review the basics of Mandarin Chinese, but this phrasebook really takes the phrases to the next level. It includes some Chinese sentences that I couldn't say before, like "Why is YouTube buffering every video I play?" Even though I have been learning Chinese on and off for years, and many of the phrases are familiar to me, I found this to be a great review tool and also a good way to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, which this book helped me identify.

Good intermediate resource but not a phrasebook
The word "phrasebook" has a pretty standard meaning: You look up a situation and there are the seven phrases you need to get through that situation. Sometimes it's even arranged for you to point out what you're trying to say to the native speaker if you can't pronounce it. This is not a phrasebook, though it's true that it's a book of phrases. But they're phrases for people who already know the stuff in a phrasebook and are looking for the right way to talk about more complicated things. My favorite discovery was "Can you please change the litter box?" If you live in China and have a maid and a cat, this could be a very useful thing to be able to say. It's not exactly an essential phrase, however. There are a lot of books that purport to teach you real language but are actually full of slang and vulgarity that won't help you navigate everyday life unless you live on the set of a bad movie. This book contains a lot of the phrases it would be more useful to find in such books. If you are an intermediate Chinese learner (A2-B1 or HSK 3-4) this is a great book to work through, playing with the phrases, practicing them and imagining yourself using them. If you are a Chinese beginner and traveling to China, though, this is not what you want.

Good book for beginner
Got free copy from Lingo Mastery via email invitation. Many different phrases for different scenarios. Nothing too overwhelming. Would recommend.

Very helpful for practicing Chinese characters
It seems to me to be a misnomer to call it a phrase book as such. Rather, it is a collection of sentences which are very well-indexed into specific categories. It gives a sample English sentence followed by the Chinese sentence and finally followed by the sentence in Pinyin, which I find to be very useful to practice reading Chinese characters. Very helpful book for that purpose!

Not a phrasebook for travel, but an interesting supplement to your learning
It's a book full of phrases and sentences. A lot of them seem somewhat negative, like how to complain about something, or say Get away from me! It's possible that some sentences sound less polite owing to random translation into English, I suppose. However on first browse, I don't see many sentences that would be useful for making friends, or connecting in the workplace, or communicating with the kids, parents, staff at a school, for example. The sentences are listed by topic, but without much coordination. They are beautifully laid out in Chinese, English, and pinyin, which is awesome, BUT if I spouted off one of these sentences, I'd have no idea what possible responses to expect, as none are given, and wouldn't be able to follow whatever someone said in reply. For travel, I prefer a phrasebook that also shows some possible responses. These are standalone sentences, so you can't really personalize them to a situation unless you already know some Mandarin. That said, if you've already mastered a basic level of spoken Mandarin and aren't going to be pursuing a degree in it but want to add a bit more fluency for interactions, browsing this book would give you some new sentence patterns and vocabulary to try out! It lands in the gap between travel phrasebooks and academic textbooks. It wouldn't imho be a good choice as an only or first Mandarin learning book, but looks interesting as a supplement to other language acquisition methods.

Ever wonder how to say THE SKY IS BLUE IN CHINESE?
I bet you have. I did. Simple sentences, then more complex stuff. It's all here. For the beginner, yes of course. But even for the more advanced among us. Great job LingoMastery!

Phrases, pronounciation, tones - it is all herein this useful book!
Best book yet! The section on pronunciation and tones is excellent, and links to an external website that provides local speakers saying those same tones or words. In addition, the core of the book - the phrases - are well organized and provide many examples of commonly used sentences a person could expect to say while in China!A worthy addition to my library and an excellent resource

Practical contents, some pictures would make it perfect
The material is excellent, as it has every day useful sentences in Chinese. For me, as a Chinese teacher, it is a good tool to help students focus in real vocabulary and to review Grammar points seen in class. As they are many sentences for each topic, I try to select the most interesting ones according to the class level.100% recommended as a travel phrasebook. On the other hand, it would be really nice if the book had some pictures in it. That way, it would become a funnier tool.
