Chinese Stories for Language Learners: A Treasury of Proverbs and Folktales in Bilingual Chinese and English (Online Audio Recordings Included)

If you just want to learn Chinese, study new vocabulary, proverbs, and idiomatic expressions, this book is absolutely perfect. I've been looking for ages for a bilingual book that also focuses on teaching. This book does that, it has the Chinese story in a traditional setting, the English translation, a vocabulary after each story, comprehension questions, and most importantly, the modern usage of the proverbs illustrated in a story set in the modern period. Its absolutely perfect for studying and ranges in my opinion from intermidate to advanced learners.As a Chinese instructor at a college in the U.S., I find this book is perfect for my Third Year Chinese class. I assigned stories from this book as extra readings, and I found in my students' write-ups that they generally enjoyed reading the stories and indeed learned a lot about Chinese culture from this book.

I was a Chinese student many years ago and was looking for a good refresher textbook. This collection of Chinese stories is thoughtfully designed, suitable for intermediate learners (i.e. with 2-3 years of Chinese) as well as more advanced learners who want to build their vocabulary or refresh their grammar. I found that the stories are lively and entertaining, and the English translations (which you can use or not) are helpful. I think it would be helpful as a classroom supplement, a one-on-one tutoring book, or as a self-study guide.

Book and related audio not only hold my interest but are improving my Mandarin Chinese. Would be thrilled if they made a series of these.

This is a very rich book on several levels, making it appealing to readers with different backgrounds and interests. To lay readers, it’s an introduction to Chinese proverbs and their associated folk tales. More scholarly readers will discover deeper meaning from the historical and philosophical contexts - a distinctive feature rarely seen in a book of this type. The contemporary examples that appear in every chapter demonstrate the timeless and universal quality of the proverbs. They help Western readers recognize the relevance of Chinese culture to themselves, and bring to Chinese readers a sense of pride. Many of the examples are based on the authors’ personal life, giving the reader a sense of reality and closeness with the authors. This book is a “light read,” but it carries quite a bit of gravitas. The general reader will find easy access to this book’s substance, but the specialist readers will recognize its depth of scholarship. Ótimo livro para estudantes de mandarim! Além dos textos explicando as expressões, eles também providenciam vocabulário, outro texto como exemplo de utilização da expressão (notícias, principalmente), bem como uma lista de exercícios no final de cada capítulo. Super recomendo!
