Lovely atmosphere (as usual) with a competent plot
Chief Inspector Gamache is called on to investigate the death of a guest at the local inn in Three Pines. The man is found hanging in the wood, an apparent suicide. However Gamache isn’t happy with the explanation from the finder of the dead man; nor does the state of the body lead him to the conclusion that the man hanged himself. This leads to an investigation into the man’s identity, his movements whilst he was in the village, and the background of the finder. If you know anything about Canadian history you’ll recognise one of the names in this story. It turns out to be germane to the plot.Plus the comfortable almost dreamlike atmosphere of the little village in the Canadian woods saturates the writing and is, as always, one of the best things about the Gamache series.Needless to say Gamache eventually arrives at the correct conclusion. This feels like a very early Gamache story; there’s none of the political manoeuvring and personal soul-searching that feature in the later Gamache novels. Plus Inspector Beauvoir is a fairly straight-forward character rather than the tortured one that he becomes in later works. If you’re a fan of the books (I am) you may find this story a little ‘light’. But it is a competent short story so it seemed fair to give it four stars.

Very thin, very small book
I love Louise Penny books and Inspector Gamache in particular. I was aware that this story is a novella, however I was expecting a reasonable read. This book is very thin, not a lot to it. Not as big as A5. Bigger print than normal Gamache books, 87 pages long. Will take me as long to read as to drink a cup of tea. Disappointing, as I like to get stuck into a story. With this you no sooner start than you have finished. I think this book is very, very expensive for what it is. I expect better than this from Louise Penny books and from Inspector Gamache stories.

Disappointingly short!
I love Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache books, mainly because they are true novels, with fully realised, believable characters, wonderfully drawn locations, and deep psychological insight - not to mention the actual detective work itself! It was not until I had bought and devoured this in little over an hour, that I discovered it was NOT a full-length book - more a short story or, to be generous, a novella, written as part of a Canadian literacy drive (should have read the reviews first, I guess). I hesitate to use the phrase "dumbed down", Penny is incapable of bad writing, although parts of this I did find pedestrian. No character development, no plot twists, rather a case of "A man is found hanged, two detectives investigate and find his killer. The End". I was left disappointed, wanting more, somewhat cheated and, frankly, slightly insulted by this "Janet and John" version of the wonderful Gamache novels.

Very Short
I finished reading it in less than two very enjoyable hours. Without some of the usual lengthy characterisations which add to the charm of her usual novels, but become a bit redundant after you've read a few. While I liked the faster moving story, I was left wanting more - and downloaded another (full-length) novel immediately after finishing this one.

short story featuring Chief Inspector Gamache
This is a book that will appeal to readers who love Louise Penny's CI Gamache Three Pines series. It's a quick read and quite interesting revealing a mystery surrounding the death of a man in the woods near the Spa Hotel, Three Pines. It was a fine read but left me wanting so much more. As a short story it is complete but as a reader of the main series I wanted a full length book which gives me so much more of the beautiful writing that Louise Penny delivers. This is a good book to introduce Gamache, Beauvoir and three Pines but cruelly teasing to those who know it well. The story is a well written piece.
