Q: Does this scan directly to PDF from the device of does it need the software to convert it to PDF as another separate step after the initial scan?

Depends on how you set it up with the computer software. If you mostly scan to pdf then set it that way and everytime you use it will do just that, but just before you scan and you want somthing different like .JPEG then you can change the settings and then scan.

Q: Can you use this scanner to scan to Adobe PDF? Or you have to use their software??

If you use the ScanSnap Manager, you can scan to file, email, pdf etc. You HAVE to use "their software" to use the scanner anyway.

Q: Can this model be used to scan receipts and exported/sent to excel?

Mine is still on the shelf, waiting to use it on a trip. I did set it up and it scanned to my IPAD but I did not try to move the image anywhere and I'm not sure you can do that from Ipad but if connected as a regular scanner it should work. I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap that is fantastic. Two years old, I scan more than 100 a day and still kicking.

Q: Will the scanned doc be searchable? Also, can a driver easily scan documents using our iPad or does it need a skilled person to scan? Thanks

My order was lost and I never got it. However I have ix500 model. It is bigger and has more processing power, HOWEVER ix100 uses same software and ipad app as ix500. You cas set up scanner to OCR scanned documents, this will make them searchable. Yoh don't have to be a tech guru to scan to ipad. Just follow instructions how to connect wirelessly to scanner. After that you just press a scan button and everything will be scanned. Documents will apear in your connected iPad. Hope it was helpful.
