One is called Crystal String and we don’t know what the other is - it looks like floss. Sorry I can’t help you more.

Does the cord stay tied with a knot? Or is there a special way to get them to stay tied?

We used the knot and then put a drop of quick drying glue on the knot. Directions sent with the beads was useless, so we watched some videos on computer. This is what the videos showed.
