Artful Memories: How to create unique art with old photographs – 25+ inspiring projects and mixed media techniques

If you are looking for unique and artful ways to work with old photos, look no further! I found that Artful Memories is chock full of project ideas, instructional projects, and tons of inspirational photos of finished projects from various artists using the techniques.I loved that this book helps demystify working with various materials & techniques too (e.g. printing on tissue paper, preparing a book to use as an altered book, printing on fabric, image transfers with matte medium, stitching on paper). The instructions and step by step photos are very helpful.I think it's helpful for you to know the book addresses key topics like selecting materials (papers, fabrics, threads, glues, etc.), and basic art principals (contrast, rule of thirds, negative space, image isolation, depth) to help make the project a success. Projects include artwork that uses paint & pens, containers (altoid tins, boxed dioramas, matchboxes, jewelry boxes), paper (collage, photo cubes, journals), altered books, tea bag art & projects that use natural materials.There are several pages of printable photos and tools & materials recommendations.If you love vintage imagery, photography, mixed media, and art, you will be wowed by this book! Was so inspired I just purchased a second copy for a friend.

I love this book! The insight and thoughtfulness of working with photographs is immense. If you label yourself as "an old soul" and desire to honor the lives found in photos this book is a must read. It provides so much kindness to the known and unknown people in photos that they become precious in a new life regardless. The authors provide so many methods to explore and create new lives in photos.There is no other book like this in my collection.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when this book arrived and can honestly say I was blown away. Artful Memories is a beautifully designed, easy to read book offering an incredible array of ideas and inspiration for found photo art. As other reviewers have noted, it’s jam-packed with amazing artwork and practical information, from tips and techniques to design theory. The projects are especially fun; I love how the authors invite you to explore ways of tweaking their projects to make them your own. As one who creates art with found photographs, I’m mesmerized by this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone drawn to found photo art. It’s a gem.

If you're in a quandary as whether to buy or not, don't hesitate, click BUY. This is a gem of a book, filled with creative altered projects, ideas, quotes and not just "flat art" as in altered books, but things like matchbook niches, frames, fabric, stitching, natural leaves, etc. Oh my gosh the list is endless. I'm so happy, happy, happy. I don't like the look and feel of digital altered art so, this is the book for me. There are 7 or 8 pages of vintage photographs to use and a detailed list of supplies. Intersting to see a list of supplies that is plain and simple, no links to art supplies houses with must have special stencils, paints and endless expensive art supplies. The authors, Jane Chipp and Jack Ravi have obviously given their hearts in compiling this book. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

When a new mixed-media art book comes out, I put it on my wish list, wait about a year, then snag a used copy for a better price. (I'm retired, gotta save somewhere!) Well, there's no better proof of how amazing this book is than the fact that apparently no one is giving theirs up!I am only about 1/3 of the way through and already have three different project ideas spinning in my head, two of which are hybrids of four original ideas. The pictures are fabulous, the instructions super clear and precise, and there are many great tips along the way. I'll be clearing away everything else in my work space to make room to play!

The book is full of great stuff

Well written, tons of close clear pictures, good explanations of techniques - everything I want in an art book. Have been following Jane and Jack on Instagram, admiring their projects, and was very happy when they decided to put it all in a book. If you want to do more with your old photos that just stick them in a box or album, buy this book and choose from a long list of fun ideas. Thanks, Jane - thanks, Jack - love this book!

What a nice surprise when I opened the book and the pages themselves look like old book pages. Some of the titles that catch my attention right away: Sleeping in a matchbox, All dressed up, and Art journaling.

Throughly enjoying the feel of this book, similar to a high end magazine. There are so many ideas sparking my creativity. It’s so nice to see photographs being displayed again.
