Dont hide you light under the bushel
This is a super product for the price. Does the job perfectly (optical link between TV Toslink output and HiFi).The actual DAC used inside is an Everest Semiconductor ES7144 LV which is not mentioned anywhere because most people are stupidly obsessed with the number of bits resolution when talking about a R-2R DAC architecture. However this is a multi level Delta-Sigma architecture DAC where the resolution s achieved by other means. What is important is the conversion THD+noise (-85 dB typ.) and the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) which is 90 dB (100 dB typ.). This is more than good for the average HiFi installation. The DAC is capable of processing 24 bit pcm data streams but this has nothing to do with the DAC resolution. You may not want to use this information because most punters are not electronic engineers (I am). However for those who do know about DAC architecture it would be an advantage in convincing them to purchase. This is because the manufacturer has deliberately avoided the issue in all their literature - if you Google Proster 192 kHz DAC you won't find any article which describes the DAC architecture used. This is because they don't want to explain the difference between R-2R and Delta Sigma architecture. The best way to do this is to make a feature of "Delta - Sigma DAC architecture with 100 dB SNR and -85dB THD+noise" and not obsolete old R-2R DAC technology. All for less than 20 quid !! brilliant.

Huge performance comes in a small package
I don't often write reviews but this little box of magic is so good it thoroughly deserves it. I bought this simply to give a games console and DVD player in a spare room, the ability to have an analogue output via the optical connection (I already have a HDMI switchbox with optical output), but with the added bonus of it having a headphone amp built in.My main amplifer for everyday entertainment is a Yamaha RX-A3050, which a couple of years ago was their flagship AV amp with a list price of ~£2000, and my headphones are Sennheiser HD-650s (~£400) so I'm well aware of what decent kit should sound like (I also use a ProJect Headbox S headphone amp too, which is ~£100) , but am absolutely astonished at how good this little 192kHz DAC/Amp sounds. Obviously, it's not as good as the Yamaha, but then nobody would expect that, but I'd confidently say this thing is giving ~80-90% of the quality/performance for 1% (yes, 1/100th) of the cost of the Yamaha at £20 (and 1/5th of the cost of my ProJect amplifier), not to mention the ridiculous size differential of the two, and bearing in mind I'm using it with pretty decent audiophile headphones, so for most people who don't have such gear, they simply wouldn't tell the difference. I certainly have no complaints about the quality as it's more than acceptable, not to mention it seems pretty capable of driving such headphones which is surprising when you consider its small size. The only downside I've encountered is the volume dial was quite sensitve when I first used it, though it seemed to get better once it was used so perhaps simply using it and warming it up has helped give it a running in.In conclusion, I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for either a DAC or headphone amplifier. And if the electronics in it last a long time (only time will tell), I'd confidently say it's probably the best £20 I've ever spent.

Great DAC for a Great price
Solid device, provides a clean sound, neutral but most DACs typicaly are. It is a great addition as you can get the best possible audio from your home devices such as your TV or games console using the spdif (optical input). If you have never listened to a set of headphones of speakers running through and external DAC before, then let me just say that your in for a big shock, to put it simply it opens up the sounds, gives whatever your listening to definition and clarity. The price is very unreflective of the quality of this product, it has a good build quality and the addition of a volume control knob is really nice at this price. However if you are looking for something to power speakers and not just headphones then I would suggest looking at a Amp&DAC combo or maybe if your on a tight budget then maybe consider combining this with a Amp. The optical cable that is included in the box is my only gripe about this otherwise great product, I found that quality that I was getting was not right, so I used another that I had lying around and there was a significant increase in the quality of sound, I hope this is something that they can address with this product in the future, nobody should have to deal with this issue when buying a product that will probably be used with this connection. Overall this is a great product for a great price, I would recommend this to anyone that love listening to music or is a bit of an movie fanatic.

Easy to set up and use
I needed something that would allow us to stream the TV into my Dad's bluetooth hearing aids and through speakers at the same time. Most sites seemed to imply it was not possible. Others drowned me in technical terminology and instructions - useless other than as a timely reminded of my own ineptitude.Anyway, finally put in a search term that mentioned this for soundbars plus headphones. Thought I may as well give it a go. Wow. Very easy to set up and worked immediately - and continues to work! I can choose whether to stream just to the hearing aids or through the speakers as well. The sound is clear. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to split sound between two outputs and who doesn't feel compelled to dive into incomprehensible jargon for the sake of something that might have marginal sound gains.
