Great Value - works just like new.
Our Dyson DC08 Allergy vacuum packed up with a burning smell a few weeks ago - A new one would cost over £200, so I decided to investigate how easy a self-repair would be. A couple of youtube videos indicate that it is pretty simple - no soldering required, you just need a torx (star head) screwdriver to remove the six screws securing the motor compartment (or a long hex key/ allen key will do as well). I was going to order a genuine dyson motor at ~£45, but I figured a YDK motor is a YDK motor whether supplied by Dyson or not and took a chance with this great value one (free postage too) - it looks almost identical to the one I removed (one minor difference is the original one has green plastic fuse casing rather than the yellow one here), and it performs just great (especially after cleaning the dyson and replacing the two filters (~£7 Qualtex brand, again, not original Dyson) - no difference in noise level (still just as noisy as the original!).So a pretty much new DC08 for ~£25, you'd be mad to pay for a whole new vacuum. Have to say though, that having taken it apart I'm not convinced there's £200 worth of product here - Dyson must make a big profit on these machines. They do perform well, but £100 would be a more reasonable price methinks.

Replacement Dyson Motor & Filters
So the Dyson died in a midst of sparks and bangs. We were going to get the Dyson repair service (~£80 someone comes and replaces the broken bits) but though I'd have a look first. Plenty of YouTube videos on how to open up the Dyson, and once inside it is all very modular. There isn't a lot to go wrong except the motor and it is very easy for someone with a bit of knowledge to replace it. When changing it is definitely worthwhile changing the two filters as well. Dyson branded motors and filters were as expensive as getting the repair done. I did some online searching and managed to get motor and filters from Small Parts. They came before the due date, well packaged, and worked perfectly. We now have in effect a brand new Dyson for £25!Lavolta® 240V YDK Motor for Dyson DC05 DC08 DC11 DC19 DC20 DC21 DC29 Vacuum Cleaner Series fits 911933-01 900228-01 907671-01 905401-01 902768-01 - Thermal Overload Cut-Out fitted

A cheap and easy fix!
When the electric motor in my Dyson vacuum cleaner started smoking and eventually stopped working I thought it was time to buy a new cleaner. A major expense! With the help of a YouTube video I realised how easy it would be to simply replace the motor. Five minutes later I’d found a supplier where I could buy a motor for 10% of the cost of a new Dyson! Within a few days the new motor arrived by post. It took me ten minutes to open up the cleaner, remove the old motor, fit the new one and put everything back together. The result? A Dyson cleaner working perfectly at a fraction of what it would have cost of a new one. So don’t bin it; check to see if can be repaired
