Hodl This Ape
I don't know if I lucked out and got one of the first-print Gaptain Gorillas, or if Knight has done running changes to address the stability issues reported in many of the negative Q3/Q4 2023 reviews, but overall I've had a better-than-average experience for a 4th Party transforming figure. With the usual arsenal of tools and chemicals for fixing up Transformers or Gunpla, you can tamp down many of the minor inconveniences of joints being too loose/tight - as advertised, everything that isn't a metal pin or Phillips screw is ABS plastic, and anything articulated can be reinforced with a thin layer of Pledge Floor Polish or Loc-Tite superglue (the CA stuff only - MEK just wicks off into vapor if it isn't sandwiched between two plastics to be fixed together forever). The one joint that isn't fixed so easily, sadly, is the bicep swivel unscrewed and photographed here - even a smear of CA doesn't seem to be enough to give the screw post enough friction to keep the rest of the arm from sliding back down from its own weight. What seemed to ease it for both the treated right arm and the untreated left arm, however, was pre-working the ratcheted pin joint that controls the shoulder height for Robot vs. Ape modes - clicking it through all 180 degrees of detents seems to release tension that otherwise makes the upper shoulder swivel try to bear all of the arm weight. After this, Gorilla was much more amenable to at least straightforward rifle hold poses.I'm still not sure what the ultimate purpose of those two extra black burrs with 3mm holes is - I presume they're meant to be barrel jackets for Gaptain Gorilla's clavicle cannons (see also the upper torso battery pack and spring-loaded missile cannons on the original Beast Wars Optimal Optimus), but the 3mm posts to fit them were never properly shaved down. A few minutes of metal filing could solve this for the adventurous collector, with what looks like minimal interference with transformation to any of Ape, Jet, or Tank modes.

Waste of money
Loose, nothing pegs in correctly, gun falls apart if you look at it funny. Looks nice...as long as you set it down and don't touch it. Highly disappointed but was cheap, so..whatever

A Knockoff with fatal flaws
The design of Optimal Optimus here, or rather “Captain Gorilla”, is fantastic. For a little 8-inch knockoff figure I’m surprised at the detail and articulation! However because of some glaring issues these stand disappointingly off to the side.Since this is a knockoff, I can’t say a joint and sizing issues really surprises me but I do have to mention them anyways as it hinders its functionality to the point I have to connect the legs to something or to each other in order for it to stand up without doing the splits, and even then it’s still a bit wobbly… the arms and head will fall to its own weight… pieces don’t connect tight enough to stay in place and for a collector, this is a fatal flaw! in fact I haven’t even attempted to transform him because of this! He just feels too fragile. The hands change out at the fingers which with the looseness makes it impossible for Optimus -err Cpt. Gorilla to hold his main gun without the fingers popping off. The gun connects right at where the fingers break away from the hand and it seems the design was to pinch the notch of the gun between the 2 parts of the hand which in my opinion was kind of stupid… but whatever.Speaking of the hands, beware of the thumbs as they are a separate ball joint. I thought it came missing one and again because of the looseness of the joints it had fallen off in shipping! Luckily it was still in the packaging and I was able to secure it back into place but it did give me a little scare tho…The other issue is that along with how the fingers come apart, other pieces do too, but unlike the fingers, not all of them seem designed too. Some glue could seal them and I will probably do that with most of them but it is kind of frustrating when you’re trying to hold him and suddenly something flies off… (Small pieces too so this definitely is not something for young kids! Choking hazard!)All in all the cons heavily outweigh the pros, so at best 3 stars if perhaps you’re lucky enough to get a model without the loose joint issue… I’m rating at a 2.5 star tho because despite the design there are flaws and with it being a knockoff they are expounded. It will take me some work to tighten the joints and glue the other pieces from falling off which is never a fun chore, but if I can get this fixed it will be an awesome figure which would raise my rating up to a 3.5 or a 4!

Better than expected
Much better quality than expected. Heavily made plastic. Almost a metal feel. Joints move smoothly. Transformations very well done. Excellent extra features

Not bad
Besides the right wing and his ankles being loose I really like this figure

one of the worst figures in my collection
this thing is a big floppy mess with no real idea of what it’s trying to accomplish. the robot mode can barely pose because the joints are unable to hold it’s massive limbs. good luck getting the gun to stay without randomly popping out. same for the ape mode, except it doesn’t even want to stay in the mode. the “vehicle” modes are atrocious. they could’ve worked if the joints and tabs were tight, but the looseness turn already ugly looking “vehicles” into a ball of plastic in your hands. don’t waste your money.

Fragile
Plastic seems sub standard. But for the cost....it is pretty cool
