Practical and Inspirational
I've been a technical writer and trainer for 40 years. Having a broader understanding of the customer learning journey helps me to create better documentation and videos. This book will meet anybody at their current level of understanding and give them a base for incorporated learning experience design into their work. The author also provides extensive references to additional resources for doing a deeper dive on the aspects of instructional design of most interest. I appreciate the humble, pragmatic, and immensely readable voice of the author as she gently guides me into the world of instructional design with respect for my intelligence and encouragement to implement instructional design in my work, if accidentally.

The Most Useful and Engaging Book on Instructional Design You Will Ever Read
Cammy Bean has written a highly engaging guide to a field of endeavor that helps people learn new things better and faster. Instructional design brings learning science, visual expression, design traditions and techniques together. Instructional designers also develop competence using a wide variety of technologies to engage and inspire their users. They conduct analyses to identify learner needs and create the experiences where learning can be modeled, measured and improved.HOWEVER - sometimes, people with no experience whatsoever with any of these kinds of activities will find themselves in a role where they must create courses or other varieties of learning experiences. They need to figure this out even if they they know nothing of learning theory, media production methods or models that guide the development process. If you happen to be THAT person, congratulations! This is a book written specifically for you.In a little under 250 pages, this highly readable collection of knowledge, examples and experiences will share the ins and outs of what you need to know and do to establish yourself as a competent, respected instructional designer. The first section, consisting of three chapters, reviews the basics of what instructional design is. It also talks about all of the activities that need to be part of the instructional design process IF YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN PRACTICE. Our author also explains why Design is so important to this systematic creative process.Cammy follows that with a second Section of 10 chapters that take you through all the components of her "Learning Pie" model for ID success (See Chapter 2). Cammy counsels on topics as diverse as how to work with subject matter experts to learning about the range of technology tools being used. Perhaps most importantly, she advises about ALL the things you need to be thinking about when developing a commercially viable learning product, not just the instructional design part. (Sometimes even instructional designers with multiple degrees are shocked to discover that there are business requirements for successful instructional designs.)Part 3 summarizes her thoughts on taking ID forward. She offers her favorite practice tested resources, a discussion guide with questions to get your designer-to-be thinking about their work, and a selected collection of books and articles with evidence for why these suggested techniques work as they do.Anyone with an interest in instructional designer will enjoy reading this.

Outstanding Read for Instructional Designers
Absolutely awesome read. Finished it in three days. I’ve been in the instruction design industry for 36 years and this is by far the best capture of what an ID does. Cammy takes a conversational narrative approach and really makes you believe she is talking to you. The explanations of each and every aspect of the profession is flawless and informative. I especially applaud her mapping of instructional examples to defined desired outcomes. A must read for new and old Instructional Designers alike.

I refer people to this book **all the time**
I'm so excited for the 2nd edition of this book! I have for years been referring people to the 1st edition, and I'm so pleased that Cammy Bean has written an update. So often people are thrown into our field with little support - they might not even know that instructional design is a field at all, much less that this would should be done with care and rigor.I have now updated my standard "Welcome to the club, here's a book you must read now" with this second edition.

Friendly and Practical Guidance
There's a reason this book is so well-loved. Cammy captures the essence of what instructional designers need to know to develop an intentional practice. If you're looking for foundation knowledge, this book is for you. And if you're experienced, you'll also find many gems. You'll feel like you're at work with Cammy and she's walking you around, explaining everything you need to know. The Second Edition is wonderful. Thanks Cammy.

Couldn't get past the organization and presentation
So, this book might very well have the best content ever. In fact, I worry a bit that I am missing some really good, helpful information because other reviewers raved about it. But I couldn't get past the style of the content - it is written borderline novel style, very little white space or highlighting of information. Each chapter comes across as one big run-on thought. I might get past that, except the quality of paper was very thin (seemingly a small step up from newsprint thickness), relatively low contrast, and you could practically read what was on the other side of the page so that was distracting as well. Again, it might have some great information in it, but I knew there was no way the style, presentation, and book quality was going to keep me engaged...so back to Amazon it goes. Honestly, I expect a book on Instructional Design to really wow me in terms of how the information is organized and presented...it just seems very uninspired. If the paper stock and print quality was a bit more readable, I probably would have given it a go. But taken all together, it just wasn't for me. I do caveat my review by saying it is quite possible there is some really great information in there! Just I know with my particular learning style, this one wasn't going to do it for me.

Not much has changed since first version
I thought this would cover more information on technical advances on AI, micro learning, AR, VR etc, but no. Short sections on all of them. Only 4 sentences on AI and very basic!!Thought info would be more up to date, but references are 5-20 years old!

Awesome.
This book is a great Kickstarter for an aspiring IDs may be new or an expert.... It's a great insight shared by the author and it covers everything an ID show know before they start bigger projects. This will definitely boost your confidence at work place if you understand the real meaning in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed each chapters.
