I ordered these probes because I was tired of having to borrow one from the Ag agent. I like that there are two soil probes included, but when I put the first one together the set screw for the foot pedal wouldn't screw into it. I'm guessing that the pedal wasn't tapped correctly and the softer screw metal got stripped. When I tried the other pedal, the other screw did work with it. So I've got two probes, one with and the other without a foot pedal. It's winter and the ground here is too hard to test, but when I take my soil samples in the spring I think I'll need the foot pedal to help drive the probe into the clay soil. Maybe I can find a tap to fix the threads for the other one. I have some doubts that the soil cores will be easy to remove from the narrow opening on the probe.

The media could not be loaded.  This pair of soil probe/samplers are some serious piece of kit. They are made of solid stainless steel tubing, that neatly and nicely screw together to form a solid tool. As you can see from the photos and the video, they both have the soil window section in the bottom of them so you can quickly and easily take a look at the different soil levels where you are testing.I got these because I have recently opened up an old field that I am tuning into a garden but I did not know what the soil is like below the very top layer. With these soil probes I can quickly push down quite deep to get an idea of the soil conditions. In the video you can see the very top layer is rich but below that is a mix of clay and sand. So this probe tells me I need to bring in quite a bit of top soil to create a new layer that will allow all my new plantings to really thrive.These soil probe/samplers were very easy to use, as you can see in the video, you just push and twist the probe down into the ground and that is it. They are lite weight, not heavy at all but they are very solid, especially when you push down on them. And when you are finished with them give them a quick hose to get the soil off of them and you can unscrew them and pack them away till the next time you need them.Another use I found for them is finding and locating old stone structures and walls that might be sitting just below the current surface. Where I am there are a lot of old stone foundations and walls everywhere and I found that these are excellent at finding them. Because you are pushing down into the soil you can quickly and often hit an old stone wall and see what direction it is layer in, same for foundations you can quickly learn where it is. Finding these old walls and foundations is awesome, I am then unearthing them and incorporating them as features in this new garden area that I am slowly building. This product is incredibly useful, so glad I got it.
