... sensitive to caffeine and have given it up for good. I was a die hard coffee fiend
I bought this as a coffee substitute as I'm very sensitive to caffeine and have given it up for good. I was a die hard coffee fiend, so this has been hard to me to do and I do still miss having my morning and early afternoon coffees.I bought this with the understanding that this is not a like-for-like taste substitute for coffee. Yes, I had no idea what to expect.I followed instructions from a cook book I have, The Art of Eating Well by Hemsley and Hemsley. They suggested adding the following to a blender: 2 tablespoons ground chicory root to 250 ml of almond milk, plus 1 tablespoon of raw honey. I tried that and nearly spat it out. It was far too strong and bitter. With a little refinement, I have come to a delicious recipe:- 1 flat teaspoon ground chicory root- 250ml hazelnut milk (I make my own and much prefer the taste to almond milk)- Whizz these in the blender- Add to pan and gently heat up until you start seeing steam but before it starts to boil- Enjoy!I don't paticularly like sweet things, and I find adding raw honey too much for me. I like the bitter taste of just the chicory and hazelnut milk.I highly recommend giving it a go. I actually prefer the taste of this to coffee, much to my surprise. The bitter taste is really pleasing and then you get a hint of hazelnuts coming through. Yum! Please just don't expect this to taste like coffee, because it doesn't and if you buy if with that in mind, you will be disappointed!

although whether it does when consumed like this I do not know
I have a coffee machine and drink three cups of the real stuff daily; I wanted a substitute so as not to overdo it. Plus there is some indication that chicory can act as a pre-biotic, although whether it does when consumed like this I do not know. Anyhow, this is far better than any other roasted coffee substitute I have tried. It's not comparable with your favourite cappuccino, but it's a different style of drink, perhaps closer to a really superior instant. It has a very slightly bitter flavour that is really quite attractive, raising it above the blandness of most instants. I drink it now out of choice (I still have my three real coffees of course).
