Sci-fi triple-bill. In 'Soldier', an inter-galactic mercenary (Kurt Russell) is rendered obsolete by a new breed of genetically engineered warriors and takes a low-grade assignment on a distant planet. He then wins back some of his dignity when he is forced to turn protector of the colony's inhabitants, defending them from a brutal attack by the gene-enhanced fighters. In 'Contact', a young astronomer (Jodie Foster) becomes convinced of the existence of extra-terrestrial life and uses satellites to sweep the stars for evidence. Finally, years later, she receives an inter-galactic transmission of what seems to be a blueprint for the construction of a spacecraft and fights for the right to pilot the craft herself. In 'Sphere', a team of top scientists (Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson) is sent to investigate the discovery of a mysterious deadly force beneath the surface of the Pacific. But shortly after their mission begins, they lose contact with the surface and begin to experience a series of strange phenomena.
