Buggy firmware.
Although it has 4 display channels which you can use to monitor 4 different frequencies, once you remove and restore (even momentarily) the 12 volt power, the bottom two channels revert to displaying memory channel 0. Although the display may show the Channel 0 name, the radio may actually be receiving what was previously programmed there. You can work around this by intentionally programming memory channel 0 into display line C or D and a simplex frequency into the other. This is a well known issue with this radio--there is no firmware fix, however the BTECH MINI UV-25X2 25 Watt Dual Band Base, Mobile Radio: 136-174mhz (VHF) 400-520mhz (UHF) Amateur (Ham) (same hardware as the KT-8900) does have upgraded firmware which fixes this issue and adds a couple of new features. Still not as slick as a big brand rig, but acceptable.Your choice if you want to save a few bucks and put up with the KT-8900 bugs or spend a few more for the UV-25X2, I chose the UV-25X2.

A good quality radio for the regular HAM. Overall very pleased with it.
This is my second QYT KT8900D. I purchased my first here on Amazon. Both are priced about the same and come in the same box. Overall the radio is very good. It's easy to program with CHIRP and the downloadable software from the manufacturer is also fairly easy to use, but a bit buggy. However, CHIRP will not program some of the features in this radio such as power up message, adding your call sign into the radio display and a few other features. This means it's a good idea to have both software packages. I do all my channel programming in CHIRP and use the manufacturer program for those added features, though I did download the radio's channel memory into it after programming with CHIRP and it had no issues with doing that. It may be all you need if you don't have multiple radios which CHIRP programs. The radio is very small so don't be surprised. It's really only slightly larger than some handhelds, though form factor is different. As others have pointed out the right rubber knob does come off easily - a little dab of silicon takes care of that issue. The microphone allows you to do much more than what I've found on other radios, which helps in rarely having to touch the radio except to power on/off. One major difference though, the radio from WEKONECT has a much better microphone. I was pretty disappointed when I opened the box and saw a cheap microphone. My other QYT KT-8900D has a high quality microphone, look and feel are great; much better cable break than the one that comes with this radio. The other also includes the normal clip on back and mount which is heavy duty. It holds the mic so well the mic doesn't easily swivel when in place. This is great because I can press the buttons on the mic to control the radio without having to hold the mic in one hand and press the buttons with the other - somewhat difficult to do while in travel mode. The mic that came with this radio on the other hand is thin, light weight and smaller. This mic also has a hanging mount made out of cheap metal. This thing would rattle like crazy if it was going to be put into one of my vehicles. In fact I'd be returning it and ordering from the other manufacture if this radio wasn't going to be in my house and travel trailer for use (ie..used as a base station and stationary). Other than the cheap microphone, this is a good little radio, works well and I'm pleased with the price point compared to my Yaesu FT-7800...which by the way also has a poor microphone. This would be a great gift for a new HAM or especially for someone with a small car with not much room. My Yaesu wouldn't fit well in my car, where this radio slides into places that a hand held wouldn't find much more room for. Looking at the picture displayed, both show the microphone and I should have selected a vendor with the better microphone, so that I take the fault on. One other thing I just realized, this radio also does not include the USB programming cable like the other seller did. I think the difference in price, about $9.00. If I purchased another, which is possible, I'll be making sure I select a seller with the better mic and with the USB programming cable included.

Delightful little radio
I was surprised by how durable the radio seemed. The user manual needs some editing, but it was easy to figure out how to set up the radio. I had a little problem when programming the settings with CHIRP since hovering the cursor over a box gives that box focus even if you have previously clicked a different box. Once I figured that out, I did fine. I haven't heard the fan running. I hope it works. I like the screen font size, color options and ability to change what is displayed. Overall, I think it will be great for an emergency radio in my Go Kit.

Great Little Radio
This is an amazing little (really little) radio for the price. Sound from the tiny speaker is surprisingly loud and easy to understand. There is no "extra speaker." I have gotten good signal reports on transmitter audio quality. It receives on a wide range of frequencies, so you can get things like NOAA weather radio and GMRS channels. I haven't programmed all the channels yet, but everyone says it works fine with CHIRP. The programming cable has to be purchased separately. I'm definitely enjoying it. 73, NM5SR.

Good little rig
Ya know when I get this I wasn't so sure about this little radio but after a few programming issues I have to admit it grows on you

Nearly impossible to program
Typical imported non-intuitive users manual. I returned radio after 20 hours trying to program it. Until all these sellers wake up and provide easy to program and use instructions for users who failed to attend M I T, I will be only buying only name brand stuff !
