The Thinkcar ThinkScan 689 is clearly designed with professional auto mechanics and repair shops in mind, but it can also be a fantastic tool for serious DIY mechanics who have the knowledge to use its wide range of functions. For the average non-specialist user, much of the advanced functionality would likely go unused, but for those with the skills to utilise it, this scanner is an incredibly powerful piece of kit.What sets it apart from budget scanners is the sheer amount of information it provides. It picked up a glow plug issue on my 2017 BMW X6 that cheaper scanners had completely missed(something only ista reported). The bidirectional capability is a real game changer, allowing you to not only read data but also perform active tests and send commands to vehicle systems.The WiFi makes software updates effortless, and the ability to email reports directly from the scanner is a huge time-saver. The inbuilt Chrome browser is another handy addition, letting you quickly search for additional fault code details without needing a separate device. I've really only used the cheap ODB2 scanners in the past apart from maybe vagcom. This Thinkcar ThinkScan 689 is on another level. It comes with pretty much everything you need in a great carry/storage case with plenty of padding to keep it safe between uses.On first boot it walks you through initial setup, including connection to WiFi and applying updates, then gets you ready to connect to your first car. I noticed there is also a agent help button you can click if you get stuck, but to be honest the app walks you through everything you need to know.Timing couldn't have been better as shortly after receiving this my partners car threw a engine management light and I pounced into action. Once connected the tablet automatically discovers the car, pulls the VIN and correctly returned all of the right details allowing for a more details analysis. Next I ran an auto scan, which to a number of minutes to run, discovered all the installed modules/hardware and returned a report containing everything it found and any error s it came across both 'stored' or 'current'. Unlucky for us it did find and issue, returned the error code and provided enough info to understand the issues whilst providing a button to prepopulate a web search for more info.Although I haven't needed to try it one of the most interesting functions looks to be the maintenance tab. This looks to be able to reset ABS, calibrate modules, reset/link TPMS, and all manner of normally dealership only functions. Not to mention just having this could save you hundreds in diagnostic fees as a 'stealership' will often charge you even over £100 just to plug it into the computer and run a scan.In my case in just the one issue I've had with my partners car it would have paid for itself. I hope that trend caries on and I will probably see if I can use this on any new car I am planning buy too.Build: the tablet seems pretty well protected by a rugged foam like case, the fold out stand is super useful, although some strong magnets on the back would have been useful too. The supplied cables all fit well and the main ODB connector use an old reliable serial type connector with thumb screws to secure, brilliant.I don't really have any negatives to say other than I haven't heard of the make before (might just be me) so not sure on how long to expect software updates for, however considering how quick you can justify the cost based on garage savings I'm not too concerned.

I got this ThinkCar ThinkScan for our cars at home. My husband has used it on both of our recently purchased cars to make sure they were in good condition. I personally don’t have much knowledge about how to use it but after watching him it actually seems quite easy to set up. It gives you step-by-step instructions, so even if you’re not experienced, you can still manage it.It’s already done a full scan of both cars and told us exactly what we needed to do. On one of the cars, it even indicated that it needed a full service, which I got done so that was really helpful. It performs loads of useful diagnostics and what I love most is how much money it can save. In the past, whenever I had car issues, I’d have to take it to a garage just for a diagnostic check which would cost anywhere from £50 to £80. After paying that, you almost feel obliged to get the repair done there because you’ve already spent the money.This tool is brilliant because you can run diagnostics at home and if there’s a problem you can shop around for parts or call a few garages to get quotes. It gives you a much better idea of what you should expect to pay.It really is amazing and I think it’s going to come in very handy for our cars in the future. We’ve only used it a couple of times so far, but it’s already given us great results. I’m really pleased with it and although it’s a bit pricey I see it as a great investment in the long run as it will definitely save money because sometimes just one garage visit can cost more than this device. If you know even a little bit about cars, it’s absolutely worth having.
