Games for Reading: Playful Ways to Help Your Child Read

I purchased this book after purchasing Games for Math, Games for Writing, and Games for learning. I was so impressed with her style and idea of learning through games. These books are true treasure troves. Day one of having this book, i had my children make Bingo boards with their spelling words. They were thrilled to do it, and we played a game after they were finished. One note though, the author does mention something about holding off on a select few of the games until they are reading, because it might interfere with the teaching method the teacher is using, and that parents aren't trained to teach children to read. As a homeschooling family i find that an ignorant opinion, which is why i rated it a '4'. Regardless, there are many great ideas in this and her other books.

My favorite thing about this book is that it breaks reading down into specific skills and gives really fun and easy ideas for games to strengthen those skills. What I really love is that includes skills like improving memory, visual discrimination, and auditory processing, which are not commonly discussed when we talk about teaching children to read. However, these are vital skills that can really hinder a child's reading success. This book is a great buy for both parents and teachers!

I believe whole-heartedly in making learning fun! This book is a great example of doing just that. Written by a teacher at a private elementary school, the games in this book help children get over stumbling blocks that hindered their ability to read. Everything type of problem from hyperactivity, undermotivation, or confusion are addressed using a creative, engaging, and budget-friendly solution. While this book is geared more for ages 4 and up, I've already used some of the concepts to further my 3-year-olds vocabulary and sight word recognition. He even surprised me when he pulled out his flash cards and starting reading words like oven, drawer, shoes, and refrigerator! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to put the joy of reading back in their child!

I have just skimmed through this, but there are plenty of great games and ideas that are perfect for kids my son's age (he'll be six in a few months). He has been enthusiastic about the few we've tried so far. I'm looking forward to doing more. It's mostly a great reminder that not everything has to look like work or reading for children to learn and benefit from it. There are many great suggestions for developing basic skills that will help the reading happen more naturally.

Great, easy to understand ideas. Author provides examples of how she uses the activities, and children to use the activities with (if child has difficulty distinguishing letters, having them complete mazes can help train their eyes). Ms. Kaye includes enough detail to explain how to do the activities, but not too much. Very approachable book, and I recommend this book for anyone tutoring a child in reading.

I am using this book to teach ELL (ESL) students. I bought a used copy and I found it to be almost new. Great resource!
