New England pond never froze!
After three years of losing fish from toxic chemicals and lack of oxygen due to major icing I decided it was time to try a different route. My pond is 6X10 and about 2 feet deep so just shy of 1000 gallons. I timed my purchase because we were expecting about a week straight of temperatures below freezing. The pond did freeze over the night after I installed the heater but the water was already at 33 degrees. I was delighted to see a hole around the filter the next day after installing it. I was even more delighted to see the ice continue to retract over the days afterward. Even though my neighbor's pond froze solid my pond never did. I have been able to see my fish all winter to make sure they're doing well. We had 20”; of snow fall last week. Even though the snow quickly covered the pond, this heater actually melted all of the snow in just 24 hours. I was under the impression that this was supposed to keep just a hole in the ice. Maybe it is just strong enough to keep a 6X10 (1000 gallon or less) pond above freezing in a typical southern New England winter. Either way I'm very happy. I hope it lasts!May, 2019 Update:Three years of super performance! I was amazed that my pond never froze in January 2018 when we had over two weeks of temperatures that never broke 32. Nights were typically down to below 0. Want to know a real kicker? I never disconnected my waterfall for the winter of 2017 and 2018! No ice dams. No frozen water whatsoever. And here is a bonus for everyone: leave your heater in your pond right through April. All that awful string algae that would normally grow when the temperatures begin to rise...gone! I had to investigate this more and learned that the heater helps get the temperature of the water high enough to allow the good bacteria to colonize quickly. That means that the algae has nothing to feed on. This spring my water has been crystal clear. I disconnected the heater in early May. I’m buying a second unit as a backup since this thing has been so useful. I’d give it ten stars if I could.

Very good unit
This is my third one. I had one for four years and I put it on pond this year and it didn't work. I had a backup I bought three years ago so I'm using that one and new was is backup. I really love the red light on it. I can look out to my pond and see the light and know it's working. There is also a nice hook underneath for aerator hose. These are the best ones I have had.

Pond frozen
This summer we put together a pond because we live in Iowa I knew we would need some sort of heater last night temperatures finally dropped low enough in Iowa to see if this gadget would do the job. Guess what... pond is frozen over. I know Amazon has a 3-month return policy but it's kind of hard to test out a product until you get the appropriate weather. I feel ripped off and I probably have dead fish. I'll let the seller explain that one to my kids.Updated review 1/13/2020 Amazon accepted the return. I got a replacement heater. Going on the 2nd year of use. It continues to work and has been very dependable.

Works well and decent price
Happy with my purchase. Have Koi Fish and my OLD de-icer quit working about a year ago. I lost most of my Koi fish (died) when pond froze over and I was away. When I returned I put this new de-icer in the pond and I believe it saved the others that had not died (I mean in the future iced-over pond events following that). I have used it already this year and it did a good job of melting the ice. It is best to keep eye on weather and plug it in before the ice/snow/arctic frigid cold shows up.. better to prevent it from freezing than trying to put it in after it has frozen, for the fish. I believe you can still do it after the freeze (look it up, please be very careful how you break the ice so you do not harm your fish, with a hot pot of water - there are free online forums that are very helpful!)This helps gas escape that builds up under the ice.

Typically lasts 1.5 seasons
We have had about 6 of these and they seem to last 1 - 2 seasons at most unfortunately. When not in use, they are stored in a plastic bin and NOT left outside so it is not a function of us not taking care of the item. What happens is that you go to plug it in and the next thing you know the GFCI is popping. I even replaced the GFCI one season but now i just fill water into a bucket and test on a separate GFCI to test :)

Great surface heater for my Koi Pond
the pond has frozen over twice this winter and both times the heater has left a foot ring of defrosted ice so that my fish may surface for air and for water gasses to escape. Over all its great, little set backs, do not leave year round as water will eventually get in and sink the heater. My first one lasted two years but that's because I left it year round. This time I will take it our after the winter season.

Not worth the extra money!
I have been using the farm innovators pond heaters for years but after having to replace them every 2-3years, I thought I would try a different brand. This lasted less than 2 full seasons and cost almost twice as much! The only thing I really liked was the little red light on top showing the unit working. The FI one doesn't have that and this unit has a longer cord than the FI heater but that is not enough for me to want to buy a new heater every season @ $70.

BEST heater ever! Survived -140!!!
UPDATE: This little heater survived our polar vortex (whatever they r calling it) & my last picture is the heater fully operational at -140!!!!So far this heater is doing a great job! Our first heater was a brand that was round with the heater in a small hole in the center. The problem was it was really hard to see if it was working. We had to go outside and stand over the hole and sometimes, I had to put my hand inside because I couldn't tell. Then it just died after 2 years. This beauty heats around the diameter and it had a light on top that constantly let's us know it's on and working. It clears the ice quickly and we're looking forward to seeing how it does in snowy, colder weather.

works good for fish ponds

Peace of mind
Plug in for winter, place in your pond to prevent freezing over and trapping of gas, little red light on top tells you it’s working

Works well. Poor design for thermal control ON/OFF
Let me start by saying this heater seems to be one of the better designs out there, but not perfect. It does a good job of staying level. It melts surrounding ice well.I like the added hook for aeration hose to keep the bubbler and heater close to each other. The only problem is it never turns off. Not sure where the temp sensor is on the heater but it seems like its not in the right spot as this heater will melt the entire pond surface. Granted my fish pond is smaller, but I would expect the power to cycle once a 4-6 inch area has been melted. Looks like I will need to add a timer to restrict it from running 24/7.

Product cracked and leached into my pond
The reviews were great and product worked, as in it did keep a small hole open through the winter. I was surprised at how small it was compared to pictures I had seen of the product online. Today I unplugged it and removed the heater from the pond to switch out for a skimmer. I noticed rust staining and also a visible crack in the heater as I was cleaning it up to put away for the season. It was not dropped. The return window is closed. First and last Laguna product I will ever buy. Should have stuck with Aquascape. Very disappointed and a huge waste of 100.00. Don't waste your time and money on this product. Coincidentally, my pond started foaming a week ago. This has never happened before which makes me wonder if it was caused by whatever was leaching out of the heater. You can hear water in the heater if you shake it. Junk.Update May 17, 2023.I contacted Laguna directly as the heater has a one year warrantee. Their technical team advised that the damage was caused by an accident and not covered. The original shipping box had no damage and I did not have an accident and drop the heater. I have ordered a new metal Aquascape heater for this winter. Aquascape stands behind their products unlike Laguna. Do not buy this product.

Did not cause any electrical faults
Other products work most of the winter then cause an electrical fault. This one worked perfectly all winter.
