A Delicious Bargain (At The Moment)
Unfortunately, Ovaltine came into my life later than Ralphie's from "A Christmas Story." I'm glad it finally did, even without Little Orphan Annie's secret decoder ring. Ovaltine is a refreshingly hot, non-caffeinated beverage that's perfect on fall and winter nights. The directions say you can also stir the powder into cold milk, but I haven't yet been that adventurous. This is the so-called "European formula" of the old malted drink. Why the label was covered with Chinese logograms was something of a mystery until I examined the label: it's manufactured in Thailand, exported from China, then distributed in this country by "The Chinese American Trading Co." out of New York and Oakland, California. Got that? Never mind. How does it taste? Connoisseurs claim that this formula is more malty, less sweet, than its American counterpart. Beats me. It does taste malty, like semi-thick hot cocoa. A gentle warning: If you put in the recommended three or more TABLEspoons into your boiling hot water, be prepared to stir. And stir. Then stir some more. If you don't, by the time you reach the bottom of your cup—Are you still stirring? Good. Keep it up.—you may find a lot of undissolved sludge. It's not especially gross, just disappointing. Didn't I stir this to the verge of tendonitis? If prepared with 8 ounces of hot water, with nothing more added, it's 80 calories. If you make it with hot skim milk, that adds another 80 calories. If you pour in sugar and maple syrup, ask yourself, "Did I want Ovaltine?" You don't need all the frills. It's quite tasty as is. At this writing it's also a bargain on Amazon, especially for a Thai-Chinese import: a pair of tall, 14.1 oz. jars is priced at around eleven bucks. By comparison, The Vermont Country Store offers only a single jar of the same thing for about 15 dollars. If you're a Prime member, you've prepaid your shipping. Enjoy.

European formula is less sweet and more malty in flavor.
In the USA they altered the formula to accommodate the necessity to have a sweeter version, which in many products developed in the USA. All these reviews that are negative, in regards to "difficult to mix', they are preparing it wrong. Like cocoa, you have to start with two-three ounces of warm milk and Ovaltine to make a syrup. Once dissolved, add additional milk.A simple electric hand mixer works well.

Now not the British Commonwealth Style Ovaltine.
Original purchased in February 2022 was delicious eaten by the spoonful as a dessert, or sprinkled on vanilla ice cream as a sundae. Not the same taste as US Ovaltine. The British equivalent in taste to US Ovaltine is a product called Bournevita. The product previously available on Amazon for several years, labelled Ovaltine Power 10 in English and in a cylindrical glass jar was made in Thailand. This was almost identical in taste to the British Commonwealth product that was made almost a century ago in metal foil sealed tin cans. It contained added glucose, vitamins and minerals in the same amounts as British Ovaltine with the only difference being added Palm oil. The product currently available on Amazon with Chinese or Vietnamese characters on the label takes is distributed by the Chinese American Trading Corp. This takes out the glucose (probably as a nod to diabetics) and adds tapioca syrup and Vegetable (possibly Soybean) oil. There is no listing of multivitamins and minerals as in Original Ovaltine or Power 10. Tastes quite different - not so good. I will post later after trying the Ovaltine in the glass jar, and the Chinese-Vietnamese-Thai-European version to see if any of these taste as good as the original or Power 10.

SIMPLY THE BEST!!!
I was an annoyingly picky eater as a child. Of the many, many things I refused to eat or drink, milk was on top of the list. I did not like its taste nor its smell. But I did love chocolate. So my mother came up with a solution, she mixed in some ovaltine and made me chocolate milk. Problem solved!I recently found myself in full freak out mode when my local Publix stopped stocking the European formula version because, yes, I still rely on my trusty and tasty Ovaltine to get some of my much needed calcium and vitamin D and whatnot (I'm still an annoyingly picky eater and still can't stand the taste of milk) .Lucky for me I was able to find it here on Amazon, which is always the first place I check when trying to find rare or discontinued "artifacts"..So I would like to thank Ovaltine, my mother, Flintstones vitamins (that's right ,I haven't upgraded to the grown up versions yet have no plans to do so anytime soon) and now Amazon for my healthy...ish bones today .I'd also like to add that the European formula tastes way better than the US formula, in my opinion, and with less sugar too.Disclaimer:Contrarily to how it may read, this review has been in no way shape or form sponsored or paid for by Ovaltine International, whatever company makes Flintstones vitamins, Amazon or my mother. This is just a long overdue shout out to a lifelong friend. Didn't know what I had till I thought it was gone.

Recommended but FYI
Excellent. Just like I remember as a child. It does not all mix so some floats on top. This does have Chinese like writing all over it. It states made in Thailand and packed in China. Who knows what is really in this but it is good. The page stated made in Switzerland but it is likely just the recipe. If you trust where this is made You will like it. I usually buy this in BC, Canada, on vacation, and it states Made in Thailand, also.
