I'm looking to reball the gpus on several first gen ps3s. would this be sufficient for doing that, in particular is the heating bed large enough?

It should work with lead free solder. I know lead free solder requires a higher temperature but this unit should work fine with that.

what is the difference between 5040-xr3 vs 5040-xts?

The 5040-XR3 has a plug in heat gun and the 5040-XTS does not have a plug in heat gun (It is hard wired) Read the descriptions between the two it does explain the differences
