Q: Will this handle thread cuts at 50 rpm on 1" stainless?

OK no problem, 16 TPI is not bad, I was thinking more like 8 TPI. It will do it though. If you will do a lot of threading, the change gears to take a bit to set up though, but if its just occasional, then no problem at all. And at 74, hopefully you can get at least 20-30 years out of it, same age as my dad! Thanks again!

Q: How large a piece an you work on.. 2x12 .?

It's about 27&1/2 inches from the face of the chuck to the 'live center' mounted on the tail piece. Approx 37&1/2 inches to the end of the bed. The stock steady center mounted on the edge of the bed will accommodate a 2" circumference pipe and allow a "thru" extension as long as you would think practical. Also, the chuck will accommodate a 1" thru pipe which could then extend back thru the chuck and out the gear drive cover which is punched for that purpose. The stock 3 jaw chuck will hold larger than 2" pipe using the outside lugs. I haven't mounted the optional 4 jaw chuck included ---but assume that It might accommodate even larger stock. I'm not a machinist expert by any means but I am well pleased with this unit and find it entirely accurate enough for my needs. PS---the service I've received from the seller is first rate---they have been great.

Q: Description doesn't say anything about reverse. Can this lathe run forward and reverse with the cross feed?

Yes, you can run the cross feed forward or reverse, regardless of the spindle direction. Meaning, if you have reverse spindle direction you can still go forward or backwards on the cross feed or carriage. This machine also three speeds available(with the front dial) for the feed rates of the carriage and the cross feed table.
