ProtoArc wins again for me
I was looking for a new wireless keyboard to replace a Meetion ergonomic wireless keyboard which after a month of use developed a very annoying (and equally random) multi-keystroke input. Being on a keyboard for 10 hours a day for work including lots of data input time, it had to go.I was not married to the idea of another ergonomic split keyboard however, there were several requirements that the new keyboard had to fulfil:1. it had to be wireless2. rechargeable without relying on changing out batteries3. have a dedicated 10-key (for certain data entry parts of my job)4. be able to connect via a USB dongle (work desktop) as well as through a Bluetooth connection (personal laptop)5. be relatively quiet (I can be a loud typist)I began the Amazon search which eventually led me to some wireless mechanical keyboards. I was concerned with mechanical keyboards because part of the draw of them is the clickity-clackety sounds that they make when being used. When I discovered this ProtoArc wireless keyboard I was tentatively excited -- it was wireless, rechargeable, full-sized with dedicated 10-key pad, and multi-pairable. Four out of my five requirements were already met. I was already familiar with the ProtoArc brand having purchased a wireless mouse last year which remains one of my best investments in recent years. I ordered the keyboard with the reservations regarding the noisiness of the keyboard when under use. It arrived quickly and I put it to the test...Pros to the keyboard (all the things I like)- It is super easy to pair with both desktops and laptops. Using the provided dongle on my work desktop and with a push of the function and F2 button, it was paired and functioning. It was equally easy to set up the Bluetooth connection with my laptop, but the keyboard also came with setup instructions if needed.- There is no noticeable lag time between keystroke and the computer using either Bluetooth connection or the dongle. In fact the keys are super sensitive and a light press is all it takes to register a keystroke.- I have used this keyboard for 2 and a half months and the battery life is even better than I expected being a backlit keyboard. I use it daily for anywhere from 8 to 12 hours and keep the backlight on the lowest intensity setting just to illuminate the key identifications and I mostly forget to turn it off between uses -- I have only had to charge the keyboard twice.- There is an internal timer to turn the backlight off when not actively being used which is great to extend that battery life.- This keyboard actually has three different connections to a total of 4 connected devices. It offers a direct wired connection (Fn F1) which is great when I need to keep using the keyboard while it is charging. There is the USB dongle connection (Fn F2) and two separate BT connections (Fn F3 or F4).- The charging is not super quick but being able to charge while using it is absolutely makes up for it.- There are two different level of riser feet on the front of the underside of the keyboard allowing for 3 different angles to help find the best ergonomic fit for your wrists.- The USB dongle has a dedicated storage spot on the underside of the keyboard so it is less likely to be lost when not in use.- The ON/OFF switch is easy to access on the front face of the bezel of the keyboard. Other keyboards have this on the underside which really makes for not turning the device off more likely.- I have three cats and constantly battle with cat hair on the desk (yes, I am aware it's a losing battle) and in my keyboard. This keyboard is the best to win the cat hair in the keyboard battle, there is no "in" as far as a surrounding bezel is concerned. Dust, cat hair, and debris is easily blown out from around the keys.- Finally, to get to the nosiness of the keyboard when in use... I would not call this keyboard loud but it also is not quiet. When I am on a call, the person on the other end absolutely can hear the keystrokes. However, when I really get to typing fast the sound of the keyboard does not become noticeably louder, I even asked someone in the same room with me if it is too loud, and the response was that other keyboards are even louder when I get to really typing quickly. So I am pleased with the overall quietness of the board. (Other reviewers go into the technical differences in the key type [brown, red, blue, etc.] and if it matters this ProtoArc looks like it uses red ones.)Cons (things that could be improved but are not deal breakers):- The media buttons are just "okay." I have used the volume/mute dial a little and while it works as expected it does feels a little flimsy. I wonder how long it will be before it gets knocked just right to no longer function.- The three indicator lights for Charging, CapsLock, and Number Lock are all really small and not overly bright. It can be a challenge to see them and they are not responsive to the backlight intensity so if the back light is at full, they are even less noticeable. I prefer to have the CapsLock indicator be on the actual button because the responsiveness of the keys is so great that sometimes an errant Tab or A can activate the lock and that tiny little light just isn't noticed.- The keyboard is full-sized but has such a minimal bezel around it that it is really easy to get errant keystrokes when picking it up. Best practice is to turn it off prior to moving it around. However I like the minimal amount of desk space for a full-size keyboard so I am willing to be very careful or to turn it off before moving it around.- Not really a CON since the keyboard is advertised with over a dozen different backlight sequences but frankly those are beyond annoying. Fortunately, once I got back to the solid light I was happy. I am sure it is engaging to other people, but not to me.

Multi-device, backlit, GREAT KEY ACTION, num pad, volume and media keys. No place to grab it.
It's love/hate with this keyboard -- and I do mean LOVE. I refuse to put it down, even though it ticks me off! The typing feels and sounds amazing. I really didn't expect a good mechanical feel for this price. The lighting is great (it does refuse to show before the battery runs out though, but that's how I know it's time to plug it in; and I use it while charging.) The battery is reasonable. I charge it once a week or so, using it all day long. The letters are lit from behind so you can see them well in the dark. I never use the fancy moving lights because I just can't deal with a lot of flashing in my peripheral vision when I'm trying to read. (There are too many options in my opinion.) The lights are bright too. I always use the lowest setting. It connects to my three devices quickly and seamlessly. I use it on my living room PC, on my tablet (like a laptop), and on my Android TV, all day long. I had to put the USB dongle on a long cord near me because I just don't get consistent connection otherwise (My PC is 10-15 feet away.) But that's always been the case in my house. It's not the keyboard's fault. I've used it over Bluetooth connected in another room. It's not perfect but it will work in a pinch, (and that's with a bazillion wireless devices, routers, and phones in between.)Gripes:First small thing is that even though there is a "Windows" mode, and a "Mac" mode there is no "Android" mode. It works well on Android for the most part, but I'd like to see more shortcut keys (like a send button when texting.) (There's an App for that though: "Quick TV Actions".)Windows is actually where it gets wonky occasionally. For some reason the Num pad, with Num Lock on, doesn't want to work sometimes. Rebooting my PC, oddly, resets it. But my other keyboards work fine. I've started using a little utility called "Numlocker" to force it to stay on. Also, the keyboard likes to sleep sometimes and there is a hiccup before I can hit my fist key. It's not bad, and doesn't happen when continuously typing. It's also a bit of a learning curve to get used to the placement of the keys. I often place my fingers too far to the right if I don't look when I first place them. (The Num pad makes it want to sit off-center on your lap.)Now for my big hate/annoyance. There is no way to pick this thing up without pressing keys!!! In addition, the keys are very easy to press so I'm always hitting something accidentally. Even the edge of the blanket on my lap hits them when I move. It's really not intended for your lap in the living room I guess, but that's where I'm using it. It needs a wrist rest, or enough extra space on the bezel(?) to pick it up. I have gotten into the habit of turning it off before I lay it down, or adjust my position. It's very annoying though. I may see if I can find some kind of rigid plastic platform, or desk-pillow to attach it to with velcro so I can have just a little thumb space to grab it. I like the slim size because I can store it in my coffee table cubbie hole and it slides in perfectly next to my storage baskets. But I pay for the convenience. It wants to slide around in your lap, so I ended up sticking a long piece of carpet tacking tape to the back and that solved the problem. However I have this problem with many keyboards because I like to put my knees up to save my back.My husband has big, long hands and says the key-spacing is just too small for him (I have medium female hands.) He loves the feel of the typing action so much, though, that he'd be willing to get used to it for full-time use. He just gets annoyed because he doesn't use it often, so when he does it feels weird to him. I may buy him a bigger one if this brand makes it.Really great keyboard overall, especially since it's not overpriced like so many keyboards recently. I'm quite happy with it in my living room despite the little things I have to work around. I shopped around and returned a couple. This ticks all my boxes.
