American black walnuts have an entirely different and very strong aroma than the typical English walnuts. I bought them specifically because I have fond memories of my grandpa cracking black walnuts in his workshop, and the whole room would fill with the scent. I'm fairly certain that there is nothing wrong with your bag of walnuts, but everyone has a personal preference of course, and the flavor is different too, just like the smell.
