Best bang for your buck with rotary lasers
This thing is awesome. I know there were older reviews of possibly old stock, rechargeable batteries not working, or poor packaging, but I've had the (mostly) exact opposite experience. Everything was absolutely brand new and packaged well, nothing bouncing around in the box at all. However, the carrying case was missing a latch and one of the hinges at the back was broken. So docking one star for that.I charged up the laser and then checked calibration. It is dead on using the calibration check procedures: I mean DEAD ON. There is zero variance throughout the orientation tests. The grade rod is really nice and seems high quality to me (I've used others that are far cheaper feeling). It's nice that there are feet on one side and tenths on the other. It's heavy and stout. The tripod is sturdy and adjusts easily. Zero complaints. The receiver is far nicer than others I've used in the past. You can adjust to two different sound levels, or silent. You can also adjust how fine tuned the precision is (which is helpful when trying to find the line initially). The remote works well, although I didn't go out 200 feet to check advertised distance.I also put it in dual slope mode and adjusted on the laser as well as the remote, and it was effortless and worked well.It does take longer to spin up than some pendulum lasers I've used, but it's like 10-20 seconds and I attribute that to the electronic leveling versus the old-school pendulum. This has to be the best value in all rotary lasers. You can spend four to six times as much to get a dual-slope function. I guess the fact that it's only IP54 instead of IP66 rated reduces the cost. But, come on, I'm not holding my laser under a high pressure washer. The only thing I'd personally appreciate is a smaller case for just the laser, receiver, and remote. I don't need the tripod and rod to be in a case. But that's just me. And, of course, a not broken case in the first place would be good. I reached out to Johnson support and will update about how they handle the issue.

Quality kit with a proven instrument for reliable results every time
This kit is well equipped with everything you need to measure and set grades, determine cut and fill locations, and set the pitch on drainage. The auto-leveling works great, and the battery life is excellent as is the workmanship of the unit overall. The supplied case is well made, efficient, and keeps all the components clean and dry during transportation and storage. If you're in the excavation, irrigation, paving, or landscape business you need a reliable laser level to guarantee you avoid low spots or inadequate pitch for water runoff. This tool will not disappoint the professional, make DIY projects easier for homeowners, and with proper care last a lifetime. Highly recommend it!

Good buy!
Great product for beginners. Works as it should and easy to understand. Only negative is it doesn’t pick very far on sunny days.

This is not quite what you would expect
First of all I want the manufacturer to contact me about this. I spent $750 and I have to say I am disappointed. General impression is that it is kinda cheaply made. It just does not have a very solid feel about it insofar as the tripod, rod, and mechanism to hold the receiver to the rod. The quality of the receiver though is very problematic. Though it is not the most expensive part of this system, like the loss of the proverbial horseshoe nail its deficiencies make the whole thing nearly unusable. Anyway, I do a lot of contracting work even though I am a lawyer by profession. Here are the problems with this thing as I see them.1. When you get the package, some of the stuff inside is rattling around. There is a reason for this. The plastic box which is durable and fairly well made, is not molded to hold the items inside. The foam insert for the laser itself only fits on one half of the laser; the other half seems to be an ill conceived misfit top. The charger, the bracket for the receiver, glasses, and a couple of other odds and ends just bounce around inside the case. This contributes to the one star value for the money.2. The receiver.a. First of all, it is not as accurate as I was led to believe. Perhaps for outside work utilizing big machines maybe, but inside work, you need something else.b. It does not move very easily up and down the rod.c. The part that is really ridiculous is the screen on the receiver. It is so shiny that trying to see the leveling arrows and level line is utterly annoying to the point of making the receiver and thus the whole laser level system just a tad short of useless. Turning on the backlight only makes the situation worse and in fact, my guess is that it may only work if you are in complete darkness.d. There is no foam section to put the receiver in. There appears to be some kind of a slot in the foam insert for the laser itself but it is so tight that I fear I will break the receiver. Not only that, as I mentioned previously, the bottom and top part of the foam insert do not match up. This is the main reason for the two single star ratings.3. Tripod and rod. I just have to say, these feel really cheaply made. I just dont have a good feeling about how long they will last. Again, I just think if you spend $750, some of these peripheral pieces should have a more sturdy feel to them.4. Laser itself. As I said at the outset, it seems to work most of the time. Not sure why it will suddenly turn off and go into leveling mode again when not a living soul is within a 100 feet of the thing. The line itself appears to be about 1/8 to 3/16th's of an inch thick. What happens is that when you are trying to adjust the receiver to get a reading, you can actually move the receiver sometimes as much as 1/2 inch and it will still register an on point reading. And I did make sure the rod was upright ie side to side level and front and back level. Because the laser level was able to make sense of a very unlevel floor although we had to refine the readings with ordinary levels, I thought that 3 stars would be fair, if not a bit generous. If the manufacturer will contact me and fix these things, I will keep the level and update this review.Thank you.
