Not quite as important as a helmet but very important if you fall
I've fallen twice at high speed downhill when I hit a deep potholes in the street night. (WW II damage in the poor sec. of town, they'll never fix it.) The bike went down and I was alone, flying thru the air over the rough asphalt street... The Kevlar (black) on the lower palms, just where your hands instinctively hit the road and are scraped long & hard, would be a bloody mess if not for good gloves. Yet the Kevlar was only slightly buffed, still like new.Just like a helmet, you can ride without gloves, but you may regret it.I bought mine in '11, and I think they ARE leather. Durable, but after many months of riding they'll look somewhat shabby, but it ain't a fashion parade out on the mean streets outside the Ring in Vienna! [Thank God the petrol is 8 per gallon here, or there would be even MORE cars on the streets. The Eight Euro/gal. forces most stubborn Teutons into taking the excellent tram system or riding their bikes.] The crochet backs are natural off-white colour cotton, helps a little with visibility at night. Wash on delicate or by hand, to reduce the shabby wear-out. The washing machine can beat them up after a few washes. They grip the hands well & fit snug (you'll need that if you fall hard), and are comfortable, and like all gloves help keep hands warm against that cold rushing wind as you cycle. If you're the type of [completely insane] rider who has a dusty black bike without even a back reflector, flying downhill at night thru all the stops at 44 MPH wearing all black, you'll not want these off-white gloves ruining your death wish. You could buy a bottle of black dye. Save the rest of the dye for when your loving Auntie knits you a royal blue cap.

Cool aesthetic gloves
Love the style of these, reminds me of a pair I had from the 80's. Well made, so far standing the test of time after some weeks of dedicated riding. Comfort padding on the parts that need padding. The weave pattern allows air flow well enough to keep the hands from overheating, but also protects against sunburn on hot days just fine. No complaints, good gloves that I can't find fault with.

cool retro gloves, could use more padding
these gloves look super cool and are well-stitched, with cotton mesh on one side and leather on the other. there's a terry cloth thumb wipe and a kevlar palm patch. the XL fits my large hands.but, these are nowhere near enough padding for longer rides. i rode a hilly 11-mile route and my hands hurt the next day, right where the padding should have been. they are padded, just lightly, and while the kevlar enhances durability, it's not all that shock-absorbing.i debated whether to give these 3 or 4 stars. i went with 4, with a caveat. if you want cool=looking gloves for light rides and short commutes, these are ok. But for longer and more strenuous rides, look elsewhere. These would be perfect if they put in thicker padding and used a gel material instead of foam.

A necessity
I finally got by bike back on the road after a decade's hiatus, and needed a bunch of extras: spare inner tube, lights, helmet, tools, and the rest. Then I was off - but without gloves. After about 15 miles, my hands were telling me, "Do something better, or you're going to be in textbooks with your name on a new kind of carpal tunnel."A bike-avid friend uses these, and was very pleased with the kevlar palms after a hands-first gravel landing. Good to know. but I was after the padding. Big improvement! Not 100%, but good enough to save me from real injury.I haven't compared brands. But, after trying these, I have no reason to. My one gripe, and a small one, is that the fit might have been better a size up - i have biggish hands. These fit, they're comfortable enough, and my hands don't get too sweaty even on those 85F days.Don't leave home without them!-- wiredweird

Value
This is the second pair I've used. The first began to tear on the woven portion after a few years. A less expensive replacement didn't last long so I'm back to the PlanetBike product. I ride a recumbent trike so these gloves are to give a grip to the twist grip shifters when hands are wet from rain or sweat. I prefer the look of this style over the modern look of all fabric gloves. The large are slightly tight but not uncomfortable. I'm concerned the XL would be too loose and not comfortable in use. When this pair wear out I'd buy the PB brand again.
